Lined Pipe in Charleston, SC

Charleston's process industry runs up the Cooper River: a 1,530-acre chemical campus at Bushy Park, a primary aluminum smelter at Mt. Holly, a 3.5-million-ton sheet mill at Huger, and the specialty chemical, pharmaceutical, terminal and shipyard work along the Neck in North Charleston. Marspec Technical Products fabricates PTFE-, PVDF- and polypropylene-lined pipe spools and supplies lined fittings and valves for those plants, with spools shipping from Fairhope, Alabama. We have been in plastic-lined piping for more than half a century, and the Lowcountry is a market we know well. This page stays on the river; the rest of the state has its own.

Up the Cooper River: Bushy Park, Mt. Holly and Huger

Bushy Park, near Goose Creek, was laid out on the Cooper River in 1970 by a pigment maker and has grown into a multi-tenant campus with shared steam, process water, nitrogen, refrigeration and wastewater treatment, rail and a barge slip on the river. Its tenants make pigments, sunscreen and fragrance ingredients, photographic and specialty film and high-voltage cable, and a nitroguanidine propellant plant is being built there for completion in 2029. Pigment synthesis means sulfuric and hydrochloric acid digestion, caustic precipitation and salty filtrate. Nitroguanidine means nitric and sulfuric acid, nitrate liquors and neutralization. Both are PTFE-lined pipe and lined valve service from the acid unloading rack to the effluent pit.

Next door, the Mt. Holly smelter returned to full capacity in 2026 for the first time since 2015, adding about 50,000 metric tons a year, roughly a tenth of national primary aluminum output, under a new power contract with Santee Cooper. Smelters and their casthouses move aluminum fluoride, caustic cleaning solutions and scrubber water. Upriver at Huger, the Berkeley sheet mill melts scrap into 3.5 million tons a year of flat-rolled steel, pickles it in hydrochloric acid before cold rolling and galvanizes it on a new 500,000-ton line. Pickle liquor, rinse, acid regeneration and fume-scrubber circuits are the classic case for PTFE- and PVDF-lined spools with PTFE-lined plug valves, with vented housings on PTFE because hot HCl permeates the liner; polypropylene is available for acid below about 150 °F where a specification calls for it.

North Charleston: the Neck, the port and the shipyards

The corridor continues down the west bank into North Charleston. On Virginia Avenue, beside the mothballed Cooper River paper mill that the port authority bought in 2024, a performance chemicals operation refines crude tall oil into rosin, fatty acids and derivatives on hot acid, caustic and solvent streams. A contract pharmaceutical site nearby runs sterile fill-finish lines on high-purity water and sanitizing chemistry. Beside them sit the Shipyard River bulk terminals, with two ship docks at 40 and 45 ft, and the former Charleston Naval Shipyard, closed by the Navy in 1996 and now the largest commercial ship repair yard on the East Coast, with three graving docks and a floating dock. The Naval Weapons Station at Goose Creek trains the Navy's nuclear operators on moored training ships. Hull blasting, tank cleaning and bilge treatment all produce acidic and caustic wastewater that lined pipe carries without rusting through.

Water, power and the Lowcountry's chemical feed rooms

The Hanahan water plant draws on the Bushy Park Reservoir, with the Edisto River as backup, and is rated at 115 million gallons a day for about 350,000 customers, running alum coagulation and storing tons of chlorine on site. The Plum Island wastewater plant on the harbor and the utility generating stations in Berkeley County, including the 2,390-megawatt coal plant at Cross with its wet flue-gas scrubbers, add ferric chloride, sodium hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, caustic and scrubber slurry to the list. The chemical feeds are small-bore lined lines, lined diaphragm valves for dosing and lined check valves at the pump discharge; the scrubber slurry usually runs in rubber-lined pipe.

What a Charleston spool package looks like

Custom lined pipe spools and lined fittings, 1/2" through 12", with PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene liners in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings, built to your isometrics in lengths up to 20 ft and matched to the flange standard and face-to-face dimensions of the lined system already installed. PTFE- and PFA-lined ball, plug, butterfly, diaphragm, check and sampling valves from our lined valves line. Lined strainers, expansion joints, spacers, spectacle blinds, sight glasses and solid PTFE pipe from our accessories range. For 50 percent caustic at a Bushy Park tank farm or a hot nitration liquor that must not cool, clamp-on steam heaters, electric tracing and heat-transfer compound.

Built to spec, shipped from Fairhope

Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5 and are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and every lined pipe spool and fitting gets a minimum 10,000-volt spark test. Liner ratings and bolt torque tables are on our technical details page. We serve Charleston, North Charleston, Hanahan, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, Huger, Summerville, Ladson, Mount Pleasant and the Berkeley and Dorchester county industrial parks. FAQ: Lined Pipe in Charleston, SC

Which liner do you recommend for nitric and sulfuric acid at a Bushy Park nitration plant?

PTFE for mixed acid, spent acid and nitrate liquors at reaction temperature, and for the cool, dilute waste acid on its way to neutralization; polypropylene is not used here, because nitric acid attacks it. Lined plug or ball valves isolate, lined diaphragm valves throttle, and lined sampling valves pull a sample without exposing the operator.

Can lined pipe handle the hydrochloric acid pickle line at the Huger sheet mill?

Yes. PTFE- and PVDF-lined spools carry hot pickle liquor, rinse water and fume-scrubber returns, PTFE-lined valves handle the acid regeneration side where temperatures run higher and chloride is concentrated, and polypropylene is available for acid below about 150 °F where a specification calls for it.

We have an existing flanged lined system in North Charleston. Will your spools bolt up to it?

Send the flange class, face-to-face lengths and liner type and we supply replacement spools and fittings to the same dimensions. ANSI B16.5 drilling is standard, and we build to odd lengths so nothing else in the rack has to move.

How do we get a quote for a turnaround spool package at a Cooper River plant?

Send isometrics, a line list or a marked-up P&ID through our contact page or call (251) 625-4949. We quote spools, fittings, valves and accessories as one package, with spools shipping from Fairhope, Alabama.
