Lined Pipe in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the only state in the country that produces iodine, and it does it by pulling brine from more than a mile underground and oxidizing it, which is about as hard on steel pipe as chemistry gets! Marspec Technical Products fabricates PTFE-, PVDF- and polypropylene-lined pipe spools and fittings and supplies lined valves, accessories and temperature-maintenance products for Oklahoma's refineries, nitrogen plants, brine operations and mills. Pick up the phone at 251-625-4949 or contact us online and we will put a price on it.

We have been in the plastic-lined piping business for more than half a century, fabricating in Fairhope, Alabama, and shipping nationwide. Oklahoma plants get the same custom spools and the same spark-tested parts as the Gulf Coast.

Oklahoma's lined-pipe industries

Refining from Ponca City to Tulsa

Five refineries run in the state: a 228,000-barrel-a-day plant at Ponca City, two in Tulsa on either side of the Arkansas River, and smaller units at Wynnewood and Ardmore. Together they carry the mid-continent's usual corrosive inventory, alkylation acid and its spent and regenerated streams, spent caustic from treating, sour water, amine solutions and the hydrochloric acid used in catalyst work. Cushing, a short drive from Ponca City, is the crude storage and pipeline hub for the middle of the country, and the terminals and treating plants that cluster around it handle produced water, biocides and corrosion inhibitors in bulk. PTFE-lined carbon steel is the usual choice for the acid and caustic transfer lines in all of those places.

Nitrogen at Enid, Pryor and Woodward

Oklahoma makes a great deal of the nation's nitrogen fertilizer. The Enid complex is one of the largest nitrogen fertilizer plants in the United States, the Pryor plant in the Mid-America Industrial Park makes ammonia, nitric acid and urea-ammonium nitrate solution, and the Woodward plant expanded its UAN unit to more than 800,000 tons a year. Those plants move anhydrous ammonia, 60 percent nitric acid, ammonium nitrate and UAN solutions, hot potassium carbonate and amine from carbon dioxide removal, and caustic for neutralization. UAN and ammonium nitrate solutions corrode carbon steel unless inhibited, and nitric acid eats most everything else; lined pipe and PTFE-lined plug and ball valves take the inhibitor question off the table on the transfer and loading lines.

Iodine, brine and the oil patch

Northwest Oklahoma's iodine plants near Woodward draw brine averaging more than 300 parts per million iodide from wells 7,000 to 13,000 feet deep, oxidize it, blow the iodine out in towers and recover it, then reinject the spent brine, and mobile units now pull iodine from oilfield produced water across northern Oklahoma before it goes to disposal. Iodine vapor, iodide brine, chlorine, sulfur dioxide solution and hot acidic brine attack every common alloy; PTFE- and PVDF-lined pipe and lined diaphragm valves are what keep those plants running. Across the Anadarko Basin, the SCOOP and STACK plays bring the same brine chemistry plus 15 percent hydrochloric acid for well acidizing and the scale and corrosion inhibitors that go with it.

The state's other process plants round out the list: the containerboard mill at Valliant and the tissue mill at Muskogee with their chlorine dioxide, chlorate and caustic bleach chemistry; glass plants in the Muskogee and Sapulpa areas; aircraft maintenance and plating shops in Tulsa and at Tinker Air Force Base with chromic, nitric and sulfuric acid lines; coal and gas stations with scrubbers and demineralizers; and the Oklahoma City and Tulsa water systems with their sodium hypochlorite, ferric and fluoride feeds.

What we build for Oklahoma

Custom lined pipe spools and fittings in 1/2" through 12" sizes, with PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene liners in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings, built to your isometrics in lengths up to 20 ft. Lined elbows, tees, crosses, laterals, reducers and instrument tees match them, and our lined valves cover ball, plug, butterfly, diaphragm, check and sampling patterns in PTFE and PFA. Lined strainers, expansion joints, spacers, spectacle blinds, sight glasses and solid PTFE pipe come from our piping accessories range. For UAN and ammonium nitrate solutions that salt out in the cold, 50 percent caustic that crystallizes near 54 F and molten sulfur, we supply jacketed lined pipe, clamp-on steam heaters, electric tracing and heat-transfer compound; an Oklahoma norther will find any untraced line on a loading rack. Liner thicknesses, flange data and torque tables are on our Technical Details page.

Tested before it leaves Fairhope

Our products comply with ASTM F1545, fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5 and are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and every lined part gets a minimum 10,000-volt spark test. A pinhole in a liner carrying nitric acid or iodide brine shows up fast in service, so we find it on the bench instead.

FAQ: Lined Pipe in Oklahoma

Which liner works for iodide brine and iodine recovery service at a Woodward-area plant?

PTFE for the oxidation and blow-out circuits where iodine vapor, chlorine and hot acidic brine are present, and for the cooler brine transfer lines on the same liner specification; PVDF or polypropylene are available there where a specification calls for them. Lined diaphragm and plug valves in the same liner finish the system.

Do you supply lined pipe for nitric acid and UAN at Enid, Pryor or Woodward?

Yes. PTFE-lined pipe and valves are used for nitric acid transfer and for ammonium nitrate and UAN solution lines where inhibitors are not wanted, and we fabricate the spools to your drawings and supply matching lined fittings.

Can lined pipe handle spent caustic and alkylation acid at a Ponca City or Tulsa refinery?

PTFE-lined carbon steel is a common specification for spent caustic, sulfuric acid and acid-soluble oil transfer within the liner's temperature range, roughly 450 F for PTFE. We confirm concentration, temperature and vacuum before quoting.

How do you get spools to an Oklahoma plant?

We fabricate custom spools in Fairhope, Alabama, and ship nationwide. Send the isometrics or a photo with dimensions and we will give you a firm date with the quote.
