Valve choices for Panhandle services
Nitric acid and nylon intermediates on the Escambia River
The Ascend complex north of Pensacola makes up to 1,500 tons a day of nitric acid to oxidize KA oil into adipic acid. On hot, strong acid and on scrubber and neutralization lines, a PFA-lined ball valve gives tight quarter-turn shutoff with no wetted metal. A lined cylindrical plug valve suits transfer duty, with low torque and no body cavity. Hexamethylene diamine, also made there, freezes near 108 °F, so its valves are traced with the line, and inline sampling valves come with heating jackets.
Methylamines and ammonia at Pace
Eastman's Pace plant reacts methanol with ammonia to make methylamines, then higher alkylamines and tertiary amines. Amine service often runs in carbon steel. Where an amine line must stay free of iron, or vents meet an acid scrubber, PFA-lined ball valves and lined ball checks fit. PFA and PTFE are unaffected by amines and ammonia.
Kraft mill acid, tall oil and turpentine
A kraft mill needs lined valves where sulfuric acid enters: unloading, dosing and the tall oil plant, whose hot acidic brine attacks ordinary stainless. Lined plug and ball valves handle the acid and brine, and PFA-lined ball valves take strong caustic make-up. Large effluent and filtrate lines get PTFE-lined butterfly valves. At Panama City, Kraton refines crude tall oil and turpentine, which swell elastomer seats, so transfer valves there should be fully fluoropolymer-lined.
Wells, reclamation and power
ECUA runs each of its 28 active wells as its own treatment plant, dosing lime, phosphoric acid and chlorine. Fort Walton Beach chlorinates nine Floridan wells, and Bay County filters Deer Point Lake water. Lined diaphragm valves throttle phosphoric acid and hypochlorite feeds, and lined ball checks guard the metering pumps. A ball valve on hypochlorite gets a vented ball, so gas cannot build in the cavity. Lime slurry is left to rubber-lined or metal valves.
Gas fires the Gulf Clean Energy Center, the former Plant Crist. Steam plants regenerate demineralizers with acid and caustic on a timed sequence, a job for actuated lined valves.
Valve types we supply
Ball, plug and diaphragm valves are PFA-lined and butterfly valves PTFE-lined, each flanged to mate with ANSI B16.5 lined pipe. Sizes vary by pattern.
Ball valves
Full port 1/2" through 10", with 5" through 10" also in reduced port; Class 300 ball valves come in 1", 1-1/2", 2" and 3". An encapsulated ball gives bubble-tight quarter-turn isolation on acids, caustic and amines.
Cylindrical plug valves
PFA-lined cylindrical plug valves, 1/2" through 2" full port and 3" through 6" reduced port, cavity-free, with no in-line adjustment. The plug turns with low torque. Grit can score the lining, so dirty service goes to diaphragm valves.
Butterfly valves
PTFE-lined, 1" through 42", with an encapsulated disc, for filtrate, effluent, cooling water and brine.
Diaphragm valves
1/2" through 8", weir type, with a PFA-lined body and a PTFE-faced diaphragm. The diaphragm keeps the bonnet out of the fluid and leaves no seat to score, so it is the throttling valve for dosing and slurry.
Check valves and sight glasses
Ball checks 1/2" through 6" with a solid PTFE ball, swing checks 1-1/2" through 24", and sight glasses 1/2" through 6".
Sampling
Sampling valves, inline or ball type, come 1/2" through 6" and take a closed sample from a live line. Reactor sampling systems draw from a vessel through a PTFE-lined dip pipe.
Automation
We build automated valve packages in house. A pneumatic or electric actuator, positioner, limit switches and solenoid go on the lined valve, on brackets and couplings we make for the fit. Each package is stroked and tested before it ships, so send the fail position, supply and control signal.
Matching valves to the lined pipe system
Ordering valves with the lined spools and fittings around them keeps flange class, face-to-face and liner consistent. Our spools come in 1/2" to 12" sizes with carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings and PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene liners. PTFE lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel are stocked; PVDF and polypropylene lined to order. Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545. Every lined spool and fitting is spark tested at a minimum of 10,000 volts.

For isolation, a PFA-lined ball valve; for transfer, a lined cylindrical plug valve. Both are rated to 400 °F, depending on lining, and keep metal out of the acid. Give us strength and temperature and we will confirm the lining and internals.
