Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Ohio
Ohio's valve problems are easy to list: hot hydrochloric acid on the pickling lines from Cleveland to Middletown, wet chlorine and titanium tetrachloride at Ashtabula, spent caustic and alkylation acid in the Toledo and Lima refineries, limestone slurry in the scrubbers along the Ohio River. A metal valve in any of them is a work order waiting to be written.
Marspec Technical Products supplies PTFE and PFA lined valves for those lines, quoted with the lined spools we build around them in Fairhope, Alabama, after more than fifty years in plastic lined piping. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Call (251) 625-4949 or contact us online and tell us what the valve has to hold.
Where lined valves earn their keep in Ohio
Pickling and galvanizing
Ohio pours roughly a tenth of the nation's raw steel, and nearly every ton of sheet passes through hot hydrochloric acid before it is cold rolled or galvanized, after which a regeneration plant recovers the acid from the iron chloride liquor. The valve that lives longest here is a lined plug: fluoropolymer plug in a fluoropolymer sleeve, no cavity to pack with scale, low torque, and an adjustment that takes up wear in place. Lined ball valves handle fresh and regenerated acid, lined butterflies the rinse water, and galvanizers around Cleveland, Canton and Columbus put the same valves on zinc ammonium chloride flux and caustic degreasing.
Chlorine, titanium tetrachloride and brine on Lake Erie
Ashtabula's chloride process pigment complex moves chlorine, titanium tetrachloride and hydrochloric acid, and the chlor-alkali plant beside it is among a few domestic sources of potassium hydroxide. Wet chlorine finds whatever metal a valve leaves exposed, so isolation goes on a PFA lined ball or plug with a fully lined body and a stem that never meets the gas, while lined diaphragm valves throttle brine, caustic potash and hypochlorite. The salt mines under the lake at Cleveland and Fairport Harbor add brine that pits stainless but not a lined butterfly valve.
Refinery caustic, acid and amine
Two refineries at Toledo, one at Lima and one at Canton run caustic treating, sulfuric acid alkylation, amine units and wastewater neutralization. Sulfidic spent caustic, spent alkylation acid carrying hydrocarbon and rich amine belong on lined ball valves for isolation and lined checks at the pumps, and the unloading racks want a lined plug valve that opens the same way after a winter shut. Lima's nitrogen complex adds nitric acid and ammonia to the schedule.
Scrubber slurry, ethanol and water treatment
Wet scrubbers at the coal units on the Ohio River mean limestone slurry, chloride-rich blowdown and gypsum dewatering: rubber lining is the usual answer for the slurry itself, and where a lined valve is wanted, lined diaphragm and butterfly valves tolerate the solids within velocity limits and lined plug valves fit where slurry packs, accepting that grit can score the sleeve. Ethanol plants in the northwest counties dose sulfuric acid and caustic, water plants on Lake Erie and the Ohio feed sodium hypochlorite, ferric chloride and fluorosilicic acid, and the fab rising in Licking County will need ultrapure water and high-purity acid valves once it starts up.
Valve types we supply
Sizes, linings and ratings are on our plastic lined valves page; all run 1/2" through 12".
Plug valves
Lined tapered plugs seal fluoropolymer to fluoropolymer with no body cavity, which is why they outlast everything else on pickle liquor.
Ball valves
PFA lined body and ball, quarter-turn and bubble tight: the easily automated isolation valve for spent caustic, acid and brine, vented for hypochlorite.
Butterfly valves
Wafer and lug pattern with a lined body and PFA encapsulated disc, 2" through 12", for rinse water, brine, filtrate and slurry where a light valve will do.
Diaphragm valves
PTFE faced diaphragm, lined weir body, no packing gland: the throttling valve for scrubber slurry, chemical dosing and caustic potash feed, rated for full vacuum.
Check valves
Lined ball and disc check valves keep acid and hypochlorite from running back through a stopped pump.
Sampling valves
Lined sampling valves pull a representative sample from a live acid or brine line with no dead leg and no exposure.
Actuators mounted and tested here
Most pickling, chlor-alkali and refinery block valves are automated, and we build those packages in-house: pneumatic and electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids mounted on the lined valve, aligned, stroked and leak checked before shipment, so the line gets one tested unit rather than a kit.
Valves and spools, quoted as one line
Valves seal best between flanges built for them, so we quote them with the lined pipe spools we fabricate and the lined fittings that match: 1/2" through 12", PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene lined, carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings, flanged to ANSI B16.5 so bolt circles and liner faces line up. Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, lined fittings are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and every lined pipe spool and fitting gets a minimum 10,000-volt spark test. Our Ohio lined pipe page covers the spools, the technical details page has torques and ratings, and for 50 percent caustic outdoors in a Toledo winter our temperature maintenance products keep valve and line above crystallization.
Serving Ohio from Toledo to Marietta
Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus, Cincinnati, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Dayton, Lima, Middletown, Ashtabula and Marietta get the same lined valves and spools, with spools and valves shipped nationwide from Fairhope, Alabama. Send the media, concentration, temperature, pressure and line size, and whether the valve isolates, throttles or samples, then call (251) 625-4949 or contact us online.
FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Ohio
Which lined valve lasts longest on a hydrochloric acid pickling line at an Ohio sheet mill?
A PTFE or PFA lined plug valve. Hydrochloric acid does not attack the fluoropolymer at any concentration, though it permeates the lining as temperature rises, so the matching spools get vented housings; the tapered plug has no cavity for iron chloride scale to pack, and when it starts to weep after years of cycling you adjust it in place rather than replace it.
Are lined valves safe for wet chlorine and titanium tetrachloride at the Ashtabula plants?
Yes, with the right pattern. A PFA lined ball or plug valve with a fully lined body keeps every metal part out of the gas stream, the stem seal is fluoropolymer, and the lining thickness is chosen for chlorine, which permeates fluoropolymers over time. Titanium tetrachloride hydrolyzes to hydrochloric acid at the first trace of moisture, so the same lining covers both services.
What valves do the Toledo and Lima refineries use on spent caustic and spent alkylation acid?
Lined ball valves for isolation and lined check valves at the pumps, in carbon steel bodies that carry full flange ratings without an alloy upgrade. Spent caustic with sulfides and spent acid with dissolved hydrocarbon both stay inside the PTFE or PFA rating at normal transfer temperatures.
Can a lined valve handle limestone slurry in an Ohio River scrubber?
A lined diaphragm or butterfly valve handles limestone and gypsum slurry at scrubber pressures if the velocity is kept in the range the liner tolerates, and a lined plug valve suits lines where solids settle and pack, though grit can score its sleeve, and rubber-lined valves often outwear fluoropolymer-lined ones in neutral slurry. Tell us the solids loading and we will size the bore.
