Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in West Virginia

West Virginia's chemistry began with brine, and the services that wear out valves today are the same family: wet chlorine and caustic from the cell room at Natrium, hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, methyl chloride and amines in the Kanawha Valley, hydrofluoric acid and fluorinated monomers below Parkersburg, and limestone slurry in the scrubbers on the Ohio and Kanawha rivers.

Marspec Technical Products has supplied lined valves for those duties for more than fifty years: PTFE and PFA lined, quoted with the lined spools we fabricate in Fairhope, Alabama. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Call (251) 625-4949 or contact us online with the service and we will recommend the pattern and the lining.

The services West Virginia puts on lined valves

Cell room chlorine, caustic and brine at Natrium

The chlor-alkali plant at Natrium in Marshall County turns salt into chlorine and caustic soda, and the valves around a cell room see wet chlorine, chlorine-saturated brine, 50 percent caustic and hypochlorite from the vent scrubber. Wet chlorine attacks steel and stainless alike, so isolation belongs on a PFA lined ball or plug valve lined end to end with a stem that never meets the gas. Brine and caustic feed go on lined diaphragm valves; the hypochlorite tail wants a vented lined ball valve and a lined check at the pump.

Kanawha Valley acids, solvents and amines

Between Nitro and Belle the specialty, agricultural and silicone chemical units move hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, caustic, methyl chloride, chlorinated solvents and amines through racks that have carried PTFE lined pipe for decades. Much of that valving is due, and a lined plug or ball valve in a carbon steel body drops onto the same flange faces at a fraction of the cost of a nickel alloy valve. Where a batch unit needs a clean draw from a solvent or acid line, a lined sampling valve retires the bleed-and-bucket routine.

Hydrofluoric acid and fluoromonomers below Parkersburg

The fluoropolymer complex on the Ohio below Parkersburg and the polyurethane raw-materials site at New Martinsville handle hydrofluoric acid, fluorinated monomers, isocyanate intermediates, acid and caustic. HF attacks glass and most alloys and finds any pinhole in a thin coating. PFA lined ball and diaphragm valves are the right call for aqueous HF: PFA permeates less than PTFE, seals on a smoother surface, and leaves nothing in the stream to pick up fluoride.

Scrubbers, mine water and gas plants

Wet scrubbers at the Ohio and Kanawha river generating stations push limestone slurry, chloride-laden recycle water and gypsum; coal preparation plants and acid mine drainage systems feed lime slurry, caustic and flocculant; the Marcellus and Utica gas plants in the northern counties circulate amine, glycol, methanol and produced brine. Lined diaphragm and butterfly valves carry the scrubber slurries within velocity limits, though rubber-lined valves often outwear them in neutral slurry; lined plug valves fit where solids settle, accepting that grit can score the sleeve; lined ball valves isolate amine and brine. Lime slurry is abrasive but only mildly corrosive and is not lined-valve service. The sheet mill under construction at Apple Grove will add hydrochloric pickling when it starts.

Lined valves by pattern

Our plastic lined valves page lists sizes and ratings; everything below runs 1/2" through 12" and flanges to ANSI B16.5.

Ball valves

Full-bore PFA lined ball valves with a fluoropolymer stem seal and a fully lined body: the chlorine and caustic isolation valve, quarter-turn and simple to actuate.

Diaphragm valves

Lined weir-type diaphragm valves throttle brine, slurry and hypochlorite with the stem sealed off by the diaphragm itself; nothing to pack and no stem packing to leak.

Plug valves

A lined tapered plug has no cavity, turns at low torque and can be readjusted in service, the combination a scaling, crystallizing or solids-bearing line needs.

Butterfly valves

Lined wafer and lug butterfly valves with a PFA encapsulated disc, 2" through 12", for filtrate, brine, dilute acid and slurry at the lowest cost per size.

Check valves

Lined ball and swing checks at the discharge of scrubber, caustic and acid pumps, with every wetted surface fluoropolymer.

Sampling valves

Lined sampling valves take a clean, representative sample from pressurized acid or solvent lines without a dead leg or a splash.

Actuated valves, built and tested before shipment

A cell room or scrubber control loop needs valve and actuator to arrive as one piece, so we assemble automated lined valve packages in-house: pneumatic or electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids mounted on the valve, stops set and the assembly cycle tested before it ships. Our services page lists the options.

Valves that match the spools

We supply valves as part of a lined system, not as loose parts. The lined pipe spools we fabricate and the lined fittings we supply, 1/2" through 12" in PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene with carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings, are flanged to ANSI B16.5 so valve face and liner flare mate with the spool's. Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, lined fittings are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and every lined pipe spool and fitting passes a minimum 10,000-volt spark test. See our West Virginia lined pipe page for spools, our technical details page for ratings and torques, and our piping accessories page for lined strainers.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in West Virginia

What valve and lining do you recommend for wet chlorine at an Ohio River chlor-alkali plant?

A PFA lined ball or plug valve with a fully lined body, so no metal part is wetted and the stem seal is fluoropolymer. PFA permeates less than PTFE, which matters on chlorine, and we pair it with lined pipe and fittings so there is no dissimilar joint on either side.

Can lined valves replace the alloy valves on Kanawha Valley acid and solvent racks?

In most hydrochloric, sulfuric, caustic and chlorinated solvent services, yes. A PTFE or PFA lined valve in a carbon steel body carries the full flange rating, covers a wider range of chemistries than any single alloy, and bolts to the same ANSI B16.5 faces the old valve used; on hot HCl, permeation sets the lining thickness and the matching spools get vented housings.

Will a lined valve hold up on hydrofluoric acid at a fluorochemical plant near Parkersburg?

PFA lined ball and diaphragm valves are a standard answer for aqueous HF and fluorinated intermediates, which attack glass, stainless and most alloys. Send us the concentration and temperature and we will confirm the rating and the lining thickness.

Which lined valves fit limestone slurry at a West Virginia scrubber or lime slurry at a mine drainage plant?

For limestone slurry, lined diaphragm valves for throttling and lined butterfly valves for isolation on larger lines, with lined plug valves where solids settle and pack, accepting that grit can score the sleeve. Keep velocity in the range the liner tolerates and the valves outlast the unlined steel they replace, though rubber-lined valves often outwear fluoropolymer in neutral slurry. Lime slurry is abrasive but only mildly corrosive, so it is not lined-valve service.
