Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Georgia

Georgia's hardest valve duties sit along two rivers and a clay belt. Chlorine dioxide runs through the bleach plants at Port Wentworth, Brunswick and Augusta. Kaolin plants around Sandersville and Wrens acidify clay slurry with sulfuric acid, and a bleach plant at Augusta ships sodium hypochlorite by rail and truck. Each of those fluids wants a different lined valve.

Marspec Technical Products supplies plastic lined valves for these services and fabricates the lined spools they bolt to. We have worked in lined pipe for more than half a century. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Georgia services that wear out ordinary valves

Chlorine dioxide at three mills

The pulp mill at Port Wentworth, the cellulose mill at Brunswick and the bleached paperboard mill at Augusta all bleach with chlorine dioxide. Brunswick generates its own on site. Chlorine dioxide solution and the chloride-rich filtrate after it pit stainless steel. A PTFE-faced diaphragm valve is our usual choice on chlorine dioxide, since it has no cavity and throttles smoothly. Lined plug valves isolate the chlorate and generator acid feeds, and lined butterfly valves carry the large filtrate and caustic extraction headers.

Kaolin bleaching along the fall line

Kaolin plants acidify clay slurry with sulfuric acid to about pH 3, then add sodium hydrosulfite to dissolve the iron that discolors it. The result is abrasive as well as acidic. A lined diaphragm valve throttles it with no seat for clay to score. Lined plug valves handle isolation, though grit can score their sealing faces. Lined butterfly valves suit the big headers for on-off duty only, and rubber-lined valves remain the common alternative.

Monomers at Riceboro

The polyacrylamide complex at Riceboro makes dimethylaminoethyl acrylate monomer as well as polymer. Acrylic acid, acrylamide and acrylate monomers carry inhibitors, and monomer left standing in a dead leg or a valve cavity can still polymerize. Lined diaphragm valves leave no dead leg, and lined sampling valves draw from the running line, not a stagnant stub. Acrylic acid freezes not far below room temperature, so its valves are traced with the pipe, using tempered water at 95 °F or less or temperature-limited electric tracing holding 59 to 77 °F, never steam.

Hypochlorite, water plants and river terminals

The Augusta bleach plant, the Savannah water plants and the mill effluent systems all handle sodium hypochlorite. Commercial bleach runs at about pH 12 to 13 and breaks down on iron, nickel and copper. The oxygen it gives off can split a valve body trapped between two closed valves. A lined diaphragm valve is our first choice. Where a quarter-turn valve is wanted, we supply a lined ball valve with a vent hole toward the upstream side. Terminal manifolds on the Savannah River switch between caustic, acids and solvents, and lined ball valves cover that whole list on one lining.

The lined valve range, pattern by pattern

Sizes differ by pattern, and the full range is on our plastic lined valves page. All of them mate with ANSI B16.5 lined pipe flanges.

Ball valves

PFA-lined ball valves run 1/2" through 10", with reduced port also offered from 5" to 10". Class 300 ball valves come in 1", 1-1/2", 2" and 3". Both give tight quarter-turn isolation on acid, caustic and terminal service.

Plug valves

PFA-lined cylindrical plug valves come 1/2" through 2" full port and 3" through 6" reduced port, cavity-free, with no in-line adjustment. Having no body cavity is why we suggest them for chlorate, generator acid and caustic that crystallizes.

Butterfly valves

PTFE-lined butterfly valves cover 1" through 42", up to filtrate and water headers far larger than any lined spool.

Diaphragm valves

Diaphragm valves, 1/2" through 8", with a PFA-lined body, keep the stem out of the process behind a PTFE-faced diaphragm: no packing to weep and no dead leg.

Check and sampling valves

Ball check valves run 1/2" through 6" and swing check valves 1-1/2" through 24". Inline and ball sampling valves and sight glasses come 1/2" through 6", and reactor sampling systems are available for batch vessels.

Actuated valves, assembled and tested

Bleach plant interlocks, terminal manifolds and water plant feed systems often run on automated valves. We mount pneumatic or electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoid valves on the lined valve, stroke it and test the package before shipment. Send the control signal, fail position and air supply with the valve list.

Valves and spools as one system

We fabricate custom lined pipe spools 1/2" through 12", up to 20 ft long, lined with PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless. PTFE-lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel are stocked; PVDF and polypropylene lined to order. Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, and every lined spool and fitting is spark tested at a minimum of 10,000 volts. Bolt torque guidance is on our technical details page. The fitting range is on our Georgia lined fittings page, and lined strainers that protect valve seats are among our Georgia piping accessories.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Georgia

Which lined valve suits chlorine dioxide at a Georgia pulp or paperboard mill?

A PTFE-faced diaphragm valve on chlorine dioxide solution and the bleach tower lines, because it has no cavity and throttles well. Lined plug valves isolate the chlorate and generator acid feeds, and lined butterfly valves take the large filtrate headers.

Do we need lined valves on nitric acid at the Columbia Nitrogen Road plants in Augusta?

Not always. At ambient temperature 304L stainless handles commercial nitric acid up to about 65 percent, because the acid keeps it passive. Lined valves earn their place where the valve also sees chloride-bearing streams, which pit stainless, or on acid above about 85 to 90 percent. They also suit sample points that must pick up no metal.

What valve holds up in acidified kaolin slurry at Sandersville or Wrens?

A lined diaphragm valve for throttling, since there is no seat for clay to score. A lined plug valve for isolation, accepting some wear on its sealing faces. Butterfly valves on the large headers should run fully open or closed. Tell us the solids content and we will also say where rubber-lined valves are the better buy.

What do you recommend for sodium hypochlorite at a Savannah or Augusta water plant?

A lined diaphragm valve first. Where quarter-turn operation is wanted, a lined ball valve vented to the upstream side, with lined ball checks at the metering pumps. Keeping metal out of the wetted path slows decomposition and the gas that comes with it.
