Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Mississippi

Most of Mississippi's lined valve work sits in Jackson County. On Bayou Casotte, a refinery of about 369,000 barrels a day moves spent alkylation acid and spent caustic. Across the Pascagoula River, shipyard shops pickle and passivate pipe, and acidic water from a closed phosphate plant is treated on site. None of those fluids is kind to a metal valve.

Marspec Technical Products supplies plastic lined valves for Mississippi plants. We fabricate the lined spools they bolt to in Fairhope, Alabama, one state line east of Pascagoula. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Mississippi services that call for a lined valve

Spent acid and spent caustic at Bayou Casotte

Alkylation leaves spent acid, acid-settler drains and acid wash water, and caustic treating leaves spent caustic. Diluted, both eat carbon steel; strong spent acid and spent caustic attack it at the seat and at velocity. Lined plug valves are the refinery habit on these lines, since there is no body cavity for sludge to pack. Lined sampling valves draw spent caustic without exposing the operator. At the unloading racks, lined ball valves isolate sulfuric acid and ferric chloride, and lined diaphragm valves meter hypochlorite and polymer.

Acidic water at the former phosphate plant

The fertilizer plant on Bayou Casotte closed and left about 700 million gallons of acidic process water behind its gypsum stacks. A federal cleanup treats close to 1.5 million gallons a day and has treated more than five billion gallons in all. Gypsum-stack water is dilute phosphoric and sulfuric acid with fluoride and fines. A lined diaphragm valve throttles it with no seat for the fines to score, and lined plug valves isolate it. The lime slurry used to neutralize it belongs in rubber-lined or metal valves, not fluoropolymer.

Shipyard shops on the Pascagoula River

The naval shipyard on the river employs more than 11,000 people and builds destroyers and amphibious ships. A second yard at Moss Point and Escatawpa builds cutters and specialty vessels. Their lined valves are in the shops, not the hulls. The shops pickle and passivate stainless and copper-nickel pipe, run chromate and zinc phosphate pretreatment, plate, and treat their own wastewater. Lined ball valves isolate those lines, lined diaphragm valves dose them, and lined ball checks protect the pumps. Stainless pickle usually contains hydrofluoric acid, which permeates fluoropolymer, so the spools beside those valves get vented housings.

Power, LNG, fish oil and water

The fossil power station on the Escatawpa River regenerates its demineralizers with sulfuric acid and caustic. That repeating sequence suits automated lined ball and diaphragm valves. The LNG import terminal at Pascagoula runs demineralized water systems, and fish-oil refining at Moss Point uses caustic and clean-in-place acids. The Jackson County utility authority doses sodium hypochlorite and ferric sulfate, as water plants inland toward Hattiesburg and Jackson dose disinfectant and coagulant. On hypochlorite we put a lined diaphragm valve first and a lined ball valve with a vented ball (vent facing upstream) second.

Six lined valve families

The families below are built to mate with ANSI B16.5 lined pipe flanges, in sizes that depend on the pattern. Drawings and ratings are on our plastic lined valves page.

  • Ball valves: PFA-lined, 1/2" through 10", reduced port also offered from 5" to 10", and Class 300 ball valves in 1", 1-1/2", 2" and 3" for higher-pressure lines.
  • Plug valves: PFA-lined cylindrical plug valves, 1/2" through 2" full port and 3" through 6" reduced port, cavity-free, with no in-line adjustment, so caustic and sludge have nowhere to collect.
  • Butterfly valves: PTFE-lined, 1" through 42", for cooling water, brine and large dilute-acid headers.
  • Diaphragm valves: 1/2" through 8", a PFA-lined body with the stem sealed behind a PTFE-faced diaphragm, our first pick for dosing and throttling.
  • Check valves: ball checks 1/2" through 6" and swing checks 1-1/2" through 24" for pump discharges and injection points.
  • Sampling: inline and ball sampling valves 1/2" through 6", reactor sampling systems, and sight glasses 1/2" through 6".

Actuated valves

Regeneration skids, unloading racks and refinery block valves are often automated. We assemble the package around the lined valve: pneumatic or electric actuator, positioner, limit switches and solenoid valve. Each package is mounted, stroked and tested before it ships. Give us the control signal, fail position and air supply, and we size the actuator to the valve.

Valves, spools and fittings on one quote

Our shop builds custom lined pipe spools 1/2" through 12", up to 20 ft long, PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene lined, in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless. We stock PTFE-lined fittings in carbon steel and stainless, with PVDF and polypropylene lined to order. Fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5, and the lined fittings we supply are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX. Torque values for lined flanges are on our technical details page. Our Mississippi lined pipe page covers the state's industries, our Pascagoula page the Jackson County plants, and our Mississippi fittings page the fitting range.

Serving the Coast, Jackson and the rest of Mississippi

Our spools and valves ship from Fairhope, Alabama. We serve Pascagoula, Moss Point, Escatawpa, Gautier, Ocean Springs, Biloxi, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Jackson and Southaven. Send the valve schedule or a marked-up P&ID with the date you need the valves on site. Call (251) 625-4949 or send it through our contact page.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Mississippi

Which lined valve suits spent acid and spent caustic at the Pascagoula refinery?

A lined plug valve for isolation, because it has no body cavity for sludge or crystals. Lined sampling valves draw spent caustic safely. Anhydrous HF, where a unit uses it, stays in carbon steel and Monel with metal-body plug valves.

What valve handles the acidic gypsum-stack water at the former phosphate plant on Bayou Casotte?

A lined diaphragm valve where the line throttles, because fines cannot score a seat it does not have. Lined plug valves isolate, accepting some wear from grit. Lime slurry for neutralization is not lined-valve service.

Do the Pascagoula and Moss Point shipyards use lined valves?

In the shops, yes: pickling, passivation, pretreatment, plating and wastewater lines. Where the pickle contains hydrofluoric acid, the lined spools next to the valves get vented housings.

Can you automate demineralizer regeneration valves for a Mississippi power plant?

Yes. We mount actuators, positioners and limit switches on lined ball and diaphragm valves and test each package before it ships. Sulfuric acid and caustic regenerant are routine service for PTFE and PFA linings.
