Lined Pipe in West Virginia

The Kanawha Valley was called the chemical center of the world during the Second World War, and West Virginia still runs on chlorine, caustic, acids and solvents: in the plants between Nitro and Belle, in the chlor-alkali and polymer complexes along the Ohio River from Parkersburg to Moundsville, and in the scrubbers and water plants that serve the coalfields. Marspec Technical Products fabricates the PTFE-, PVDF- and polypropylene-lined pipe spools those lines need and supplies the lined fittings and valves to match, with spools shipping to West Virginia from Fairhope, Alabama. We have been in the plastic-lined piping business for more than fifty years, long enough to have seen most of the Chemical Valley spec sheets. Contact us online with your isometrics or a line list and we will take it from there.

Chemical Valley and the Ohio River: where lined pipe earns its keep

The chemical industry grew up in the Kanawha Valley because of salt brine, and brine, chlorine and caustic soda are still the family tree of what gets made around Charleston. Today the Institute, South Charleston, Belle and Nitro sites produce specialty and intermediate chemicals, agricultural chemicals, methanol and silicone derivatives in units that move hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, caustic, methyl chloride, chlorinated solvents and amines. Those plants have decades of PTFE-lined pipe in service, much of it due for replacement. A PTFE-lined carbon steel spool gives fluoropolymer chemical resistance with the pressure rating of steel, without the cost of a nickel-alloy spool.

Chlor-alkali and polymers along the Ohio

The Ohio River corridor is where the state's heavy chemistry lives now. A large chlor-alkali plant at Natrium in Marshall County makes chlorine and caustic from salt, with a polyurethane raw-materials complex a few miles away at New Martinsville that has its own acid, caustic and solvent lines. Downriver, the fluoropolymer complex below Parkersburg handles hydrofluoric acid and fluorinated monomers, Willow Island and Sistersville host specialty chemical and silicone units, and the counties around Parkersburg market themselves as a polymer zone with Ohio River barge access. Wet chlorine, 50 percent caustic, hypochlorite, brine and HCl are the daily diet here, and PTFE liners handle all of them without pitting, stress cracking or iron pickup, in vented housings on the chlorine and HCl lines because both permeate the liner; PVDF handles the brine and HCl but not the caustic.

Coal, power and Marcellus gas

West Virginia's coal-fired generating stations on the Ohio and Kanawha rivers run wet flue-gas desulfurization, which means limestone slurry, chloride-laden scrubber water and gypsum dewatering lines that chew through unlined steel. Coal preparation plants and acid mine drainage treatment systems feed lime slurry, caustic and flocculants to neutralize low-pH water before discharge. In the northern counties, Marcellus and Utica gas processing and fractionation complexes handle amine, glycol, methanol and produced brine. The chemical lines among them are routine duty for PTFE-lined spools and PTFE-lined plug and ball valves, with PVDF-lined spools within velocity limits on scrubber water that carries solids, lined diaphragm valves where grit would score a plug, and polypropylene available where a specification calls for it; lime and limestone slurry usually run in carbon steel, HDPE or rubber-lined pipe.

Two more pieces of the picture: a 3 million ton per year electric-arc sheet mill is under construction at Apple Grove in Mason County, expected to start in 2027, and sheet mills bring hydrochloric acid pickling, acid regeneration and galvanizing flux lines with them. An aluminum rolling mill at Ravenswood, a small specialty refinery at Newell in the Northern Panhandle, and the water and wastewater plants serving Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown and Wheeling round out the demand for hypochlorite, ferric chloride and caustic feed piping.

What we build for West Virginia plants

Custom lined pipe spools and fittings in 1/2" through 12" sizes, PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene lined, in carbon steel or 304 or 316 stainless housings, fabricated to your drawing with straight runs up to 20 ft. We supply lined elbows, tees, crosses, reducers and laterals so the whole system has one liner material and one flange standard. For a replacement spool on an existing rack, send us the field dimensions and we will match the face-to-face.

Our lined valves include PTFE-lined ball, plug and butterfly valves for chlorine, caustic and acid isolation, PTFE- and PFA-lined diaphragm valves for throttling and slurry duty, lined check valves and lined sampling valves, all sized to the pipe and flanged to match.

Piping accessories cover the rest of the line: lined strainers ahead of pumps and control valves, lined expansion joints for thermal movement on long racks, PTFE spacers and spectacle blinds for positive isolation, sight glasses and solid PTFE pipe. For lines that have to stay warm in a mountain winter, our temperature maintenance products include clamp-on steam heaters, electric tracing and heat-transfer compound. Caustic at 50 percent begins to crystallize in the mid fifties Fahrenheit, and a January morning at Natrium or Belle is well below that.

Specification and quality

Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, and our fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5. Lined fittings are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and every lined pipe spool and fitting is spark tested at a minimum of 10,000 volts before it ships. Liner temperature limits, vacuum ratings and wall thicknesses are on our technical details page; our other products page covers vessel accessories, custom PTFE machining and fluoropolymer coating.

Serving the Mountain State

We ship lined piping to Charleston, South Charleston, Institute, Belle, Nitro, Huntington, Parkersburg, New Martinsville, Moundsville, Wheeling, Weirton, Morgantown, Clarksburg and Point Pleasant. Turnaround on custom spools is quick, and they leave our Fairhope, Alabama shop by truck. Call (251) 625-4949 or contact us online, tell us what the line carries and at what temperature, and we will recommend the liner.

FAQ: Lined Pipe in West Virginia

What liner do you recommend for chlorine and caustic service at an Ohio River chlor-alkali plant?

PTFE for wet chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorine-saturated brine, where it is the only liner we would trust long term. For caustic and clean brine we quote PTFE as well; PVDF is available for the clean brine, and polypropylene for both, where a specification calls for them.

Can lined pipe replace alloy piping in Kanawha Valley specialty chemical units?

In most acid, caustic and solvent services, yes. A PTFE-lined carbon steel spool carries full ANSI flange ratings and covers a wider range of chemistries than any single alloy, which is why the valley plants have used it for decades.

Do you supply lined pipe for flue-gas desulfurization scrubbers at West Virginia power plants?

We do. PVDF-lined spools within velocity limits, lined diaphragm valves and lined strainers handle chloride-rich scrubber water and gypsum lines where abrasion plus low pH defeats unlined steel, and polypropylene-lined spools are available where a specification calls for them; rubber lining is the usual answer for the limestone slurry itself.

How do we keep lined caustic lines from freezing outdoors in a West Virginia winter?

Pair the lined spool with a clamp-on steam heater or electric tracing and heat-transfer compound under the insulation. This keeps 50 percent caustic above its crystallization point without the thermal stress of a jacketed line.
