Lined Pipe in North Carolina

The largest integrated phosphate mine and chemical plant in the world sits on the Pamlico River in Beaufort County, and that is only the start of North Carolina's appetite for corrosion-resistant piping! Marspec Technical Products fabricates PTFE-, PVDF- and polypropylene-lined pipe spools and supplies lined fittings, valves and accessories to plants across the state. We build in Fairhope, Alabama, ship nationwide, and have been doing this for more than half a century. North Carolina's industrial mix, phosphoric acid on the coast, biologics in the Triangle, fluorochemicals on the Cape Fear and lithium in the Piedmont, covers nearly every service a lined system was invented for.

Four North Carolina industries that keep lined pipe busy

Aurora phosphate

The Aurora operation mines phosphate ore by the millions of tons and converts it on site, burning sulfur to make sulfuric acid, reacting the acid with rock to make wet-process phosphoric acid, and purifying part of that acid for food and technical grades. Those streams, 93 to 98 percent sulfuric acid, fluoride-bearing phosphoric acid, fluosilicic acid and purified acid that must stay free of iron, are the reason PTFE- and PVDF-lined pipe and PTFE-lined plug valves are everywhere on a phosphate site. The purified acid circuit in particular is a textbook lined-pipe service: the product is sold on its low metals content, and a steel surface anywhere in the line would put iron back into it.

Research Triangle biomanufacturing

The Raleigh-Durham market has been ranked the top biomanufacturing hub in the nation, and the plants keep coming: drug-substance and contract biologics capacity at Holly Springs, injectables at Concord, vaccine and gene therapy work around Research Triangle Park, and more than 775 life-science companies statewide. Behind every bioreactor is a utility and chemical system moving water for injection, buffers, sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid for clean-in-place, solvents and sodium hypochlorite for decontamination. PFA- and PTFE-lined piping and lined diaphragm valves are specified in those services because they do not corrode, do not shed metal ions and clean to a smooth, non-stick surface.

Fluorochemicals and nuclear fuel on the Cape Fear

On the Cape Fear River in Bladen County, a fluorochemical plant produces fluoropolymers and monomers including the only domestic PFA for the semiconductor industry, chemistry that begins with hydrofluoric acid and runs through fluorinated intermediates that attack ordinary metals. Downriver at Wilmington, a nuclear fuel fabrication plant converts uranium hexafluoride to ceramic fuel, another process with hydrofluoric and nitric acid in the piping. Water utilities along the lower Cape Fear have meanwhile rebuilt their treatment trains around PFAS removal, with the usual hypochlorite, ferric and caustic feeds alongside.

The Battery Belt and the lithium belt

The 14-billion-dollar battery cell plant at Liberty in Randolph County opened in late 2025, and the Carolina tin-spodumene belt around Kings Mountain, Bessemer City and Cherryville holds the largest hard-rock lithium deposit in the country, with mine reopening and lithium hydroxide conversion projects in planning. Cell plants handle electrolyte solvents and N-methylpyrrolidone recovery; lithium conversion means sulfuric acid roasting, caustic and lithium hydroxide slurry, all of it corrosive, abrasive or both. Add the fluff pulp mill at Plymouth, the kraft mills at Riegelwood and Roanoke Rapids with their chlorine dioxide bleach plants, one of the largest pork processing plants in the world at Tar Heel with its clean-in-place acids and caustics, and the boric acid, demineralized water and flue gas scrubber systems at the state's nuclear and coal stations.

What North Carolina plants order from us

Liner thickness, flange dimensions, bolt lengths and torque procedures for lined flanges are published on our Technical Details page so your fitters have them before the crate arrives.

Standards, testing and paperwork

Everything we supply complies with ASTM F1545. Fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5 and are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and each lined part passes a minimum 10,000-volt spark test before it ships. Material certifications travel with the order, which matters when the end user is a pharmaceutical plant or a nuclear fuel facility.

Serving Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad and the coast

We ship to Charlotte, Gastonia, Kings Mountain, Raleigh, Durham, Holly Springs, Clayton, Greensboro, Liberty, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Wilmington, Aurora, Plymouth, Roanoke Rapids and Asheville. Send a spool list or a valve schedule and we will turn it into a quote, and sequence the lines you need back in service first. Call 251-625-4949 or contact us online.

FAQ: Lined Pipe in North Carolina

What do you recommend for purified phosphoric acid lines at a North Carolina phosphate plant?

PTFE-lined pipe and PTFE-lined valves. The product is sold on its low metals content, and PTFE adds nothing to it while shrugging off the fluoride that attacks glass and alloys. PVDF is an option on the cooler, more abrasive rock-acid side.

Is lined pipe acceptable in a Research Triangle biologics plant?

Yes, for clean-in-place chemical supply, buffer preparation, waste decontamination and solvent lines. PFA and PTFE liners are inert and non-stick, and lined diaphragm valves give the dead-leg-free shutoff those utilities need.

Can you handle hydrofluoric acid service for the Cape Fear fluorochemical and nuclear fuel plants?

PTFE-lined carbon steel is widely used for aqueous HF within the liner's temperature limits, and we supply spools, fittings and valves in the same liner so there is no dissimilar joint in the line. Tell us concentration and temperature and we will confirm the liner.

Do you supply lined piping for lithium hydroxide conversion in the Kings Mountain area?

We do. Sulfuric acid roasting and leach circuits suit PTFE or PVDF, caustic and lithium hydroxide slurry suit PTFE, with polypropylene available where a specification calls for it, and our traced and jacketed pipe keeps hot caustic from crystallizing in winter.
