Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Washington
Washington runs spent acid and caustic through five refineries on the north Sound, chlorine dioxide through bleach plants on the Columbia and the Olympic Peninsula, nitric acid and caustic through Hanford tank waste treatment and chromic acid through aerospace anodizing lines. In each case the valve is where a steel wetted part gives out first.
Marspec Technical Products of Fairhope, Alabama supplies plastic lined valves for those services and fabricates the PTFE, PVDF and polypropylene lined spools they bolt to. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. More than half a century in plastic lined piping goes into every order, and we ship nationwide. Call (251) 625-4949 with the media and conditions, or contact us online.
Where Washington plants put lined valves
Cherry Point, March Point, Ferndale and Tacoma
Five refineries with roughly 640,000 barrels a day of capacity run alkylation acid and spent acid, caustic treating and spent caustic, amine, sour water and the hypochlorite and ferric chloride at their wastewater plants. Spent acid and sulfide-laden spent caustic pit a steel seat, so the isolation valves are PFA lined ball valves on caustic, amine and sour water and PFA lined plug valves on acid and sludge, where the cavity-free tapered plug does not trap solids.
Chlorine dioxide and kraft liquor at Longview, Port Townsend and Camas
The kraft and paperboard mills on the lower Columbia and Puget Sound move white liquor, 50 percent caustic, chlorine dioxide, peroxide and sulfuric acid for tall oil. Chlorine dioxide is the defining service: it corrodes stainless quickly and PTFE resists it, so bleach plant generator and tower lines get PTFE lined diaphragm valves with no packing gland to leak gas. Lined plug valves ride through hot, scaling liquor without seizing, and lined butterfly valves cover the large filtrate and washer lines.
Hanford, Richland and the Tri-Cities
Treating 56 million gallons of tank waste means caustic, nitric acid, nitrate and nitrite brines, ion exchange and effluent treatment, and vitrification of low-activity waste began in late 2025. Nitric acid rules out polypropylene and hot caustic rules out PVDF, so PTFE and PFA lined ball, plug and diaphragm valves cover both ends of the pH scale on one specification. Nuclear fuel fabrication at Richland adds hydrofluoric acid and ammonia; a fluoropolymer lining handles both, though HF permeates it even at ambient temperature, so the spools on HF lines get heavy-wall liners and vented housings. We supply the lined valves and piping, not radiological equipment.
Aerospace acids, Moses Lake silicon, food CIP and water
Anodizing and plating lines at Everett, Renton and Auburn run chromic, sulfuric and nitric acid and caustic chem-milling, where small-bore PFA lined ball and diaphragm valves dose and isolate without contaminating a bath. The silicon anode plants at Moses Lake handle chlorosilanes and hydrochloric acid, a PFA lined ball valve service, with vented housings on the spools because HCl permeates fluoropolymers. Yakima Valley fruit and hop processors, Columbia Basin potato plants, Tri-Cities and Walla Walla wineries, dairies and seafood plants feed hot caustic, nitric and phosphoric acid and peracetic sanitizer to CIP skids through lined ball valves, and the King County treatment plants dose hypochlorite, ferric chloride and bisulfite through lined diaphragm valves and checks.
Valve types we supply to Washington
All six patterns run 1/2" through 12", flanged to bolt to ANSI B16.5 lined pipe; linings and ratings are on our plastic lined valves page.
Plug valves
A PFA encapsulated tapered plug in a fully lined body seals fluoropolymer on fluoropolymer: low torque, no cavity, in-line adjustment. The valve for kraft liquor, spent acid and anything that scales.
Diaphragm valves
Weir type with a PTFE faced diaphragm and PFA or PTFE lined body. Stem and bonnet never see the process, so they throttle chlorine dioxide, hypochlorite and slurry with no packing to leak.
Ball valves
A PFA lined ball turning in a PFA lined body, bubble tight and self draining. The isolation valve for caustic, acids, amine, chlorosilanes and CIP chemicals.
Butterfly valves
PFA encapsulated disc in a lined wafer or lug body, 2" through 12", for filtrate, rinse water, dilute acid and large lines.
Sampling valves
Lined sampling valves take a representative sample from a live acid, liquor or product line with no dead leg and no operator exposure.
Check valves
Lined ball and disc check valves stop backflow at hypochlorite, acid, caustic and demineralized water pumps with no metal spring or hinge to seize.
Automation
We assemble automated valve packages in-house: pneumatic or electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids mounted on the lined valve and stroke tested before shipment, so the mill or refinery receives one tagged assembly. What we mount and test is on our services page.
Matching valves to the lined pipe
Valves are quoted with the plastic lined pipe and fittings they bolt to, which are PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene lined in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings, so liner faces, flange class and bolt torques agree from end to end, with lined strainers ahead of valves on liquor and brine. Liner selection for each Washington industry is on our Washington lined pipe page, and pressure, temperature and vacuum limits are on the technical details page.
Serving Puget Sound, the Columbia and the Inland Northwest
Spools and valves ship from Fairhope, Alabama, with service to Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Renton, Bellingham, Ferndale, Anacortes, Vancouver, Longview, Camas, Port Townsend, Port Angeles, Yakima, Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, Walla Walla, Moses Lake and Spokane. Send the media, temperature, pressure and line size, and say what the valve must do. Call (251) 625-4949 or contact us online.
FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Washington
Which lined valve is right for chlorine dioxide at a Longview or Port Townsend bleach plant?
A PTFE lined diaphragm valve. PTFE is unaffected by chlorine dioxide solution at bleach plant concentrations, and the diaphragm seals the stem away from the process so there is no packing to leak gas. Lined plug valves on chlorate and acid feed and lined butterfly valves on filtrate round out the plant.
Can one lined valve specification cover nitric acid and caustic in Hanford or Tri-Cities work?
Yes. PTFE and PFA linings resist nitric acid, sodium hydroxide and nitrate brines alike, so PFA lined ball, plug and diaphragm valves can be specified across both services. We supply the lined valves and piping with the documentation your project requires, not radiological equipment.
What valves do you recommend for spent caustic and spent acid at the Anacortes and Cherry Point refineries?
PFA lined ball valves for spent caustic, amine and sour water isolation and PFA lined plug valves for spent sulfuric acid and acid sludge, because the lined plug has no cavity to trap solids. Both bolt to lined spools welded to ASME B31.3 and flanged to ANSI B16.5.
Do you supply actuated lined valves for Washington food plants and water utilities?
We do. Pneumatic or electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids are mounted and tested on the lined valve in our own shop, which suits CIP chemical isolation and hypochlorite dosing where a control system cycles the valve.
