Plastic Lined Piping Accessories in Arkansas

Arkansas recovers bromine from Smackover brine in Union and Columbia counties, and the same brine carries lithium. Osceola pickles sheet steel in hydrochloric acid. Batesville runs chlorine, bromine and oleum through batch reactors, and Stuttgart refines edible oil. Each of those lined systems needs strainers, blinds, joints and vessel fittings that resist the same chemistry.

Our Fairhope, Alabama shop lines steel spools with PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene, and Marspec Technical Products supplies the accessories that bolt between them. Lined piping has been Marspec's trade for more than fifty years. Send your line list through our contact page, or call (251) 625-4949 to talk it through. The state overview is on our lined pipe in Arkansas page.

The accessories, and where they work in Arkansas

Strainers and sight flow indicators

South Arkansas plants recover only about 1.5 to 1.8 pounds of bromine per barrel of brine, so they move a great deal of it. It arrives salty and carries scale and iron. Lined Y and basket strainers keep that debris out of pumps and exchangers. Glass and PTFE both resist bromine. A lined sight flow indicator lets an operator check color and flow on a bromine line. Spools around bromine and chlorine take vented housings and a liner thickness chosen for the service, since both permeate fluoropolymers.

Blinds, spacers and expansion joints

The flat-rolled mill at Osceola pickles strip in hydrochloric acid, with HCl storage tanks and scrubbers on its pickling lines. When a pickle tank or scrubber comes down, a lined spectacle blind isolates it positively. PTFE expansion joints at pump suction and discharge absorb vibration and the growth of hot acid headers. Solid PTFE spacers take up the space when a flow meter or valve is pulled, and armored spacers handle thicker gaps under high bolt load. The PTFE-lined spools in this service are vented, since hot HCl permeates the liner.

Mixing tees

Bromine recovery acidifies the brine before chlorine is added, and the stripped brine is neutralized before it is reinjected. Both steps blend one fluid into another in a flowing line, which is the job of a lined mixing tee. The same tee dilutes concentrated acid or caustic for water treatment and neutralization, with the heat of dilution taken inside PTFE.

Solid PTFE pipe

The edible oil refinery at Stuttgart and poultry plants in Northwest Arkansas dose phosphoric acid, caustic, peracetic acid and hypochlorite through short runs. Food plants are washed down every day, and a steel housing in that spray can corrode from the outside in. Solid PTFE pipe has no steel to corrode. It suits short dosing runs there, and sample and vent lines in any plant.

Vessel accessories for batch chemistry

The custom chemical plant at Batesville runs 69 multipurpose glass-lined and stainless batch reactors from 1,000 to 6,000 gallons. Its listed capabilities include chlorination, bromination and sulfonation, using chlorine, bromine and 30 percent oleum. Reactors like those are where vessel accessories belong. PTFE spargers put a gas below the liquid surface, and PTFE-lined dip tubes charge and withdraw from the top. Reactor sampling systems draw from a closed batch. Nozzle liners and tank bottom valves keep the fluoropolymer barrier intact at a vessel's openings. For oleum, the liner is PTFE, not PVDF.

Heat, machining and coating

The nitrogen complex at El Dorado includes a sulfuric acid plant, and 98 percent acid freezes a little above 32 °F. Fifty percent caustic sets up as crystals below about 54 °F, and most Arkansas January nights are colder. Electric tracing with heat transfer compound covers long outdoor runs. Clamp-on steam heaters cover valves, strainers and low points, and fully jacketed pipe and fittings hold viscous streams hot. We also machine PTFE parts to drawings, and our fluoropolymer powder coating gives steel parts a corrosion-resistant finish.

Matching the line

An accessory sits between two lined flanges, so we quote it against the rating, liner and housing of the pipe on each side. The lined fittings we supply are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545. For the spools on either side, we keep PTFE lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel in stock, with PVDF and polypropylene lined to order. Dimensions and ratings are on our fittings page, our lined valves page and our technical details page. FAQ: Plastic Lined Piping Accessories in Arkansas

Do sight flow indicators work in bromine service at the south Arkansas brine plants?

Yes. Glass and PTFE both resist bromine, so a PTFE-lined sight flow indicator with a glass window suits bromine and acidified brine lines. Vent the housings on the adjoining PTFE-lined spools, because bromine permeates the liner.

Which accessories does a hydrochloric acid pickling line in Mississippi County need?

Basket strainers to catch scale before it reaches the circulation pumps, PTFE expansion joints to isolate pump vibration, and spectacle blinds at every tank and scrubber. Sight flow indicators on acid transfer help too. Vent the housings on the PTFE-lined spools, since hot HCl permeates the liner.

What vessel accessories suit glass-lined batch reactors at an Arkansas specialty chemical plant?

PTFE dip tubes and spargers, reactor sampling systems, and PTFE expansion joints at the reactor nozzles. The joints keep pipe loads from reaching the glass lining. Send the nozzle schedule and we will quote them together.

Does direct lithium extraction from Smackover brine need lined accessories?

Direct lithium extraction handles chloride brine, hydrochloric acid and caustic, much like the bromine plants. Lined strainers, spectacle blinds, mixing tees and sight flow indicators fit that service, quoted against the plant's line list.
