Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in North Carolina

The world's largest integrated phosphate mine and chemical plant sits on the Pamlico River, the nation's top-ranked biomanufacturing hub sits in the Triangle, and the country's largest hard-rock lithium deposit sits west of Charlotte. Three very different valve problems, one answer: a fluoropolymer lining.

Marspec Technical Products supplies plastic lined valves in PFA and PTFE and fabricates the lined spools and fittings they bolt to in Fairhope, Alabama, where we have built plastic-lined piping for more than half a century. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Where lined valves earn their keep in North Carolina

Sulfuric, phosphoric and purified acid at Aurora

The Aurora operation in Beaufort County burns sulfur for sulfuric acid, reacts it with rock for wet-process phosphoric acid, and purifies part of that acid to food and technical grades sold on low metals content. Rock acid carries fluoride, silica and gypsum, which attack alloys and pack seats, so PTFE-lined plug valves cover transfer and evaporator feed. The purified circuit is stricter: any steel surface puts iron back into the product, so PFA-lined ball and diaphragm valves with no wetted metal handle it.

Clean-in-place and decontamination in the Triangle

The Raleigh-Durham market has been ranked the nation's top biomanufacturing hub, with biologics plants at Holly Springs, injectables at Concord and vaccine and gene therapy work around Research Triangle Park. Plant utilities move sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid for clean-in-place, sodium hypochlorite for decontamination, buffers and solvents. PFA-lined diaphragm valves are the natural fit: the weir drains, there is no packing or dead leg, and the lining neither corrodes nor sheds metal ions; lined sampling valves and checks complete the CIP and waste-kill systems.

Hydrofluoric acid on the Cape Fear

A fluorochemical plant in Bladen County makes fluoropolymers and monomers from chemistry that starts with hydrofluoric acid, and a nuclear fuel plant downriver at Wilmington converts uranium hexafluoride to ceramic fuel with HF and nitric acid. HF attacks glass and stainless steel; PFA- and PTFE-lined ball valves isolate it, lined diaphragm valves meter it, and neither puts metal in the stream. Water utilities on the lower Cape Fear dose hypochlorite, ferric and caustic through the same valves.

Lithium, batteries and bleach plants

The 14-billion-dollar battery cell plant at Liberty opened in late 2025, and lithium hydroxide conversion is planned for the spodumene belt around Kings Mountain. Cell plants handle electrolyte solvents and recover N-methylpyrrolidone; conversion means a sulfuric acid roast, which runs too hot for any lining, then leach liquor, caustic and abrasive lithium hydroxide slurry. PFA-lined ball valves take the solvents, lined plug and diaphragm valves the slurry. The pulp mills at Plymouth, Riegelwood and Roanoke Rapids add chlorine dioxide, chlorate and sulfuric acid for lined diaphragm and plug valves, and the nuclear and coal stations add boric acid and scrubber slurry.

Valve types we supply

Each type is PTFE- or PFA-lined, 1/2" through 12", with flanges that mate with ANSI B16.5 lined pipe; the rest is on our plastic lined valves page.

Diaphragm valves

A PTFE-faced diaphragm seals against a lined weir with the stem outside the process, no packing, no dead leg, and a body that drains. The biologics and purified-acid choice.

Sampling valves

Lined sampling valves take a representative sample from a live acid, slurry or CIP line with no dead leg and no operator exposure.

Ball valves

Lined body and encapsulated ball, quarter-turn and bubble-tight, for HF, purified acid, caustic and solvents, with a bore that drains clean.

Plug valves

A lined tapered plug sealing fluoropolymer on fluoropolymer: low torque, no cavity for gypsum or lithium hydroxide solids to pack, and adjustable in line as it wears.

Butterfly valves

PFA-encapsulated disc in a lined wafer or lug body, 2" through 12", for filtrate, dilute acid, brine and the larger caustic lines.

Check valves

Lined ball and disc checks keep acid, hypochlorite and CIP chemicals from running back into a pump, with nothing metallic to corrode.

Automation

CIP skids and acid transfer interlocks are automated as a rule, and Marspec assembles automated valve packages in-house: pneumatic or electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids mounted on the lined valve, stroked and tested before shipment. We size the actuator from the control signal, fail position and supply you give us.

Matching valves to the lined pipe system

Our valves are meant to bolt to the lined spools we fabricate and fittings we supply, which run 1/2" through 12", lined with PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings. Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5 and are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and no lined spool or fitting leaves without a spark test of at least 10,000 volts. Lined strainers from our piping accessories keep fines off a seat. Torque procedures are on our technical details page, and the industries are described on our North Carolina lined pipe page.

Serving Charlotte, the Triangle, Wilmington and the coast

Spools and valves ship from Fairhope, Alabama, to Charlotte, Gastonia, Kings Mountain, Raleigh, Durham, Holly Springs, Concord, Greensboro, Liberty, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Wilmington, Aurora, Plymouth and Roanoke Rapids. Send the valve schedule or P&ID, say which valves isolate, throttle or sample, and we will quote valves and spools together. Call (251) 625-4949 or reach us through our contact page.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in North Carolina

What lined valve belongs on purified phosphoric acid at the Aurora plant?

A PFA-lined ball valve for isolation or a lined diaphragm valve for control, both with no wetted metal, since the acid is sold on its low iron content and a steel surface anywhere in the valve would undo the purification. PTFE-lined plug valves suit the rock-acid side where gypsum and silica are the problem.

Are lined valves acceptable in a Research Triangle biologics plant?

Yes, on clean-in-place caustic and acid supply, hypochlorite decontamination, buffer preparation and waste-kill systems. PFA-lined diaphragm valves drain, have no dead leg and shed no metal ions, and material certifications ship with the order.

Can lined valves handle hydrofluoric acid at the Cape Fear fluorochemical and fuel plants?

PTFE and PFA are among the few materials that resist aqueous HF, though HF permeates them even at ambient temperature, so the spools get heavy-wall liners and vented housings; lined ball and diaphragm valves put no metal in the stream. We confirm concentration and temperature against the lining's rating before quoting.

Which lined valves fit lithium hydroxide conversion near Kings Mountain?

Lined plug valves on sulfuric acid leach and lithium hydroxide slurry, where solids would pack a ball valve cavity, though grit can score a plug sleeve too; lined diaphragm valves, with no seat to score, for throttling; and PFA-lined ball valves on caustic. If the circuit is sequenced, we assemble the automated packages in our shop.
