Plastic Lined Piping Accessories in Mississippi
Mississippi's lined piping carries chlorine and hydrochloric acid at two titanium dioxide plants, hot pickle liquor at Columbus and chlorine dioxide at the pulp mills. The strainers, blinds, expansion joints, dip tubes and tracing around that pipe decide whether a line can be isolated, opened and kept flowing. Marspec Technical Products supplies them, along with lined spools built in our Fairhope, Alabama shop.
Plastic-lined piping has been our business for more than half a century. Call (251) 625-4949 with a tag list or the problem, or contact us online. The statewide overview is on our lined pipe in Mississippi page, and the Bayou Casotte refinery is covered on our Pascagoula page.
Where accessories earn their place in Mississippi
Pigment plants at DeLisle and Hamilton
Mississippi has two chloride-process titanium dioxide plants, at DeLisle in Harrison County and at Hamilton in Monroe County. The process chlorinates titanium ore, oxidizes the titanium tetrachloride to pigment and recycles the chlorine. The dry chlorides travel in steel. The vent scrubbers, their hydrochloric acid and the neutralizing caustic run in PTFE-lined pipe. Those housings are vented, because chlorine and HCl permeate the liner. Lined spectacle blinds give positive isolation before a scrubber is opened. PTFE expansion joints keep piping strain off tower and pump nozzles. On the acid side, glass-window sight flow indicators let operators confirm circulation while the line stays closed.
Scale and acid in the Golden Triangle
Columbus pickles hot-rolled strip in hydrochloric acid ahead of its cold mill and galvanizing lines. The oxide scale ends up in the acid, where it wears pump impellers and plugs spray headers. Lined basket and Y strainers ahead of the circulation pumps catch it, and the basket comes out at a line stop. Where a tank is heated with live steam, a PTFE sparger spreads the heat with no metal in the bath. Solid PTFE spacers fill the gap when a meter or valve comes out of a lined line.
Bleach plants at New Augusta and Columbus
The kraft mills north of New Augusta and at Columbus are built for bleached pulp, much of it fluff grades. Their bleach plants make chlorine dioxide on site, a solution that attacks stainless steel. PTFE-lined pipe carries it. Where sulfuric acid is diluted for pH control, a PTFE-lined mixing tee blends it into the water. The liner tolerates the heat of dilution. Solid PTFE pipe serves the short sample and vent runs around the generator.
Poultry plants and water works
Mississippi raises about 700 million broilers a year, sixth in the nation. Its processing plants dose peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite into chiller and wash water through small lines. Solid PTFE pipe or 1/2" and 1" PTFE-lined spools carry those feeds, and lined strainers protect the metering pumps. A sight flow indicator on a hypochlorite line shows whether the pump is moving liquid or decomposition gas. Water plants statewide do the same on hypochlorite and ferric feeds.
The accessory range
Tell us the flange rating, liner and housing on either side, and we match each item below to the line.
- Piping accessories: lined strainers, PTFE expansion joints, spectacle blinds, solid and armored PTFE spacers, sight flow indicators, mixing tees and solid PTFE pipe
- Vessel accessories: tank bottom valves, dip tubes, nozzle liners, spargers and reactor sampling systems
- Temperature maintenance: heat transfer compound, clamp-on steam heaters, electric tracing, and fully jacketed pipe and fittings
- Services: custom PTFE machining and fluoropolymer powder coating
Tanks, heat and machined parts
Acid, caustic and bleach are safer drawn from the top of a tank than drained through a bottom nozzle. PTFE-lined dip tubes do that, and nozzle liners carry the fluoropolymer through a vessel nozzle. Where a tank must drain completely, a lined tank bottom valve seals at the vessel floor with no dead leg.
Caustic at 50 percent starts crystallizing around 54 °F, and every Mississippi winter brings nights colder than that. Electric tracing under heat transfer compound keeps an outdoor caustic line open within the liner's limit. A clamp-on steam heater handles a valve or low point; lines that must stay hot all year go in fully jacketed pipe and fittings. When a connection needs a part no catalog lists, we machine it from PTFE. Fluoropolymer powder coating protects metal parts that need a corrosion-resistant surface.
Standards and the rest of the line
Every lined spool and fitting is spark tested at a minimum of 10,000 volts, and our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545. PTFE lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel are on our shelves, and PVDF and polypropylene lined to order. Fitting dimensions are listed on our lined pipe and fittings page, and liner ratings on our technical details page. FAQ: Plastic Lined Piping Accessories in Mississippi
Where does lined pipe start and stop at a Mississippi chloride-process TiO2 plant?
The dry chlorides travel in steel, and the chlorinator and oxidizer operate at furnace temperatures no liner can take. Lined pipe and its blinds, joints and sight flow indicators belong where the process meets water: the scrubbers, hydrochloric acid recovery and caustic neutralization.
Can lined strainers handle the scale in hydrochloric pickle liquor on a Golden Triangle steel line?
Yes. A PTFE-lined basket or Y strainer ahead of the circulation pump catches the oxide scale, and the basket can be cleaned at a line stop. Give us the acid temperature, flow rate and solids load and we will size it.
What should a Mississippi poultry plant use for hypochlorite and peracetic acid feed lines?
PTFE-lined spools or solid PTFE pipe, with lined strainers ahead of the metering pumps and a sight flow indicator to show gas in the line. Hypochlorite pits stainless steel and metal ions speed its decomposition, and PTFE handles both sanitizers.
Can you supply blinds and spacers for a turnaround at a Gulf Coast refinery in Mississippi?
Yes. Send the line list with flange ratings and liners. We will quote lined spectacle blinds, solid and armored PTFE spacers, lined strainers and expansion joints with the spools. Tell us your required date when you request a quote.
