Lined Pipe in Georgia
Georgia's corrosive service is spread across the whole state. Cellulose mills bleach pulp on the coastal plain, kaolin plants acid-bleach clay on the fall line, and Augusta makes nitric acid on the Savannah River. Up north, Dalton dyes carpet, Cartersville etches solar wafers and Gainesville processes poultry. Marspec Technical Products fabricates plastic-lined spools for that work in Fairhope, Alabama. Call (251) 625-4949 to talk through a line.
Our liners are PTFE, PVDF and polypropylene, and we have been at this for more than half a century. Send a spool sheet or a photo of the failed piece, or contact us online for a quote.
Where Georgia plants need lined pipe
Pulp, paper and cellulose
Georgia's pulp and paper mills lean toward bleached and specialty grades. Jesup's three fiber lines make about 600,000 metric tons a year of high-purity cellulose, fluff pulp and viscose pulp. Augusta makes solid bleached sulfate paperboard, Macon makes paperboard for food cartons, and Brunswick and Port Wentworth make cellulose pulp. Chlorine dioxide and its filtrate go in PTFE-lined pipe, and so does hot caustic extraction. Our pulp and paper page covers the rest of the mill.
The fall line and the Savannah River
Kaolin is mined along the fall line around Sandersville. Bleaching that clay takes sulfuric acid and sodium hydrosulfite. The acidified slurry is abrasive as well as corrosive, so it goes in PVDF-lined pipe kept within velocity limits, or in rubber-lined steel. Along the river at Augusta, the nitrogen complex makes nitric acid. Our Augusta page covers that region, and our Savannah page covers the coast.
Carpet, solar cells and batteries
The Dalton area has been the center of American carpet making for decades. Its dye houses and finishing plants run acid dye baths, caustic scours and large wastewater plants. South of Dalton, Cartersville makes solar cells at a plant built for 3.3 GW a year of ingots, wafers and cells. Wafer texturing and cleaning use potassium hydroxide, hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid, and the deionized water those lines need. At Commerce, SK Battery America's battery cell complex, built for about 22 gigawatt-hours a year, adds electrolyte and solvent recovery.
Power, water, food and pharmaceuticals
Georgia Power runs coal plants at Bowen, near Cartersville, and Scherer, near Juliette. Bowen began adding scrubbers in 2005. At coal plants, scrubber wastewater and demineralizer regeneration chemicals are lined-pipe service, while limestone slurry usually runs in rubber-lined steel. Atlanta's Hemphill plant, about 137 million gallons a day, and its Chattahoochee plant, about 65, draw mostly on Lake Lanier. They and the state's other utilities feed hypochlorite, coagulants and caustic.
Georgia took first place in broiler production in 1998. The processing plants around Gainesville sanitize with peracetic acid and chlorine and clean in place with caustic and acid. Near Covington, a plasma fractionation plant of 1.1 million square feet runs on buffers, ethanol and CIP chemistry. Its water for injection stays in electropolished 316L stainless. The chemical feed and wastewater neutralization around it are where our pipe belongs.
Spools, fittings and valves for Georgia
Our Fairhope shop builds spools 1/2" through 12", in lengths up to 20 ft. Housings are carbon steel or 304/316 stainless with ANSI B16.5 flanges. We stock PTFE-lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel; PVDF and polypropylene are lined to order. See our lined pipe and fittings page for the range, or our Georgia fittings page for replacing fittings in an existing system.
For ball, plug, butterfly, diaphragm, check and sampling service we supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves, stocked in Stafford, Texas, which ship from Fairhope, Alabama. We build automated valve packages in house. The range is on our lined valves page, and Georgia service is on our Georgia valve page.
PTFE is our usual recommendation in Georgia, as anywhere: chlorine dioxide, hot caustic, hydrofluoric acid and peracetic acid all go in it. HF and HCl lines get vented housings, since both permeate PTFE, and HF gets a heavy-wall liner. PVDF is the toughest, most abrasion-resistant of the three liners. It suits deionized water and dilute acids, but not potassium hydroxide or other caustic above about pH 12. Polypropylene is available where a specification calls for it, never on oxidizers.
We also supply lined strainers, sight flow indicators, PTFE expansion joints, spacers and spectacle blinds for the line, plus dip tubes and spargers for tanks. A north Georgia freeze will stop 50 percent caustic in an outdoor rack. Clamp-on steam heaters, electric tracing and heat-transfer compound keep it moving, and our Georgia accessories page has more.
Built and tested to standard
Fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5, and our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545. The lined fittings we supply are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX. Before shipment, every lined spool and fitting is spark tested at a minimum of 10,000 volts. Carbon steel housings leave primed for field top-coating. Our Technical Details page lists liner temperature limits, liner thicknesses, flange dimensions and torque tables.

FAQ: Lined Pipe in Georgia
Which liner suits the texturing and etch chemistry at a Georgia solar cell plant?
PTFE for hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid and hot potassium hydroxide, with vented housings on the HF and HCl lines. PVDF is an option for deionized water and dilute acid, but not for caustic above about pH 12.
What do you recommend for chlorine dioxide and hot caustic extraction at a Georgia cellulose mill?
PTFE-lined pipe for both, and for the 50 percent caustic that feeds the extraction stage. PVDF is not for caustic above about pH 12, and polypropylene is never used on chlorine dioxide.
What lined pipe fits peracetic acid and CIP chemicals in a Gainesville-area poultry plant?
PTFE-lined pipe with lined diaphragm valves for peracetic acid, hypochlorite and CIP caustic and acid. Polypropylene is not used for peracetic acid or other oxidizers.
How do Georgia plants order, and how is timing set?
Send isometrics or a line list. Lined pipe, fittings and valves ship nationwide from Fairhope, Alabama, where the spools are fabricated. We quote a fabrication time with every order, so give us your required date when you ask for the quote.
