Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Alabama

An Alabama lined valve might face wet chlorine at McIntosh, peroxide at Theodore, pickle acid at Calvert or HF at Decatur. Each service fails a valve in its own way, and each points to a different pattern and lining.

Alabama is where we work from. Our spool shop is in Fairhope, across Mobile Bay from the chemical corridor, and we have built lined pipe for more than fifty years. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Reach us at (251) 625-4949 or through our contact page; each pattern is described on our plastic lined valves page.

Alabama services and the valves that suit them

Chlorine, bleach and peroxide on the Mobile corridor

Olin's McIntosh plant on the Tombigbee lists bleach, chlorine, hydrogen, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda among its products. Wet chlorine and hydrochloric acid get PFA-lined ball valves, and the spools beside them are vented because both permeate fluoropolymer. Bleach decomposes on iron, nickel and copper, so dosing gets lined diaphragm valves and isolation gets ball valves with a vented ball. Evonik's Theodore site makes hydrogen peroxide, which releases oxygen as it breaks down; a lined diaphragm valve leaves no cavity to trap it. Phenol from the plant next door freezes near 105 °F, which puts tracing on those valves.

Pickling acids at Calvert and Decatur

Calvert's carbon steel mill and Nucor's flat-rolled mill at Decatur pickle in hydrochloric acid, and Calvert's stainless mill uses mixed nitric and hydrofluoric acid. PFA-lined ball valves and lined cylindrical plug valves isolate acid tanks and regeneration feeds. Scale fines can score a plug liner, so dirty rinse and makeup lines go to lined diaphragm valves. HF permeates fluoropolymer, so mixed acid valves sit between heavy-wall, vented spools, and large fume scrubber lines take PTFE-lined butterfly valves.

Fluoropolymers and terephthalic acid at Decatur

Daikin's Decatur plant has made PTFE and melt-processable fluoropolymers since the mid-1990s, which means hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid streams. PFA-lined ball valves isolate both without shedding the iron that discolors resin. The terephthalic acid complex, rated about 750,000 tonnes a year, runs its oxidation in hot acetic acid with bromide. Its acid recovery lines suit PFA-lined plug and ball valves. Crystal slurry can score a plug liner, so it goes to diaphragm valves wherever the slurry is below their 302 °F rating. Acetic acid freezes near 62 °F, so outdoor valves are traced.

Bleach plants at the pulp mills

Georgia-Pacific's mills at Pennington and Brewton make solid bleached board. A bleach plant makes chlorine dioxide from sodium chlorate in strong sulfuric acid, and its filtrate is acidic and full of chloride. Lined diaphragm valves throttle chlorine dioxide solution, lined plug valves take chlorate and generator acid, and lined butterfly valves carry filtrate.

The lined valve range

Sizes depend on the pattern. Ball, plug and diaphragm valves are PFA-lined and butterfly valves PTFE-lined, all with ANSI B16.5 flanges that bolt to lined pipe.

Ball valves

Full port from 1/2" to 10" and reduced port from 5" to 10". Class 300 ball valves come in 1", 1-1/2", 2" and 3". The default isolation valve for chlorine, hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid and caustic.

Cylindrical plug valves

PFA-lined cylindrical plug valves, 1/2" through 2" full port and 3" through 6" reduced port, cavity-free, with no in-line adjustment. Low torque and the cavity-free body suit acid transfer and tank farms.

Butterfly valves

From 1" to 42", PTFE-lined with an encapsulated disc, for scrubber, filtrate and cooling water lines where a ball valve would be heavy.

Diaphragm valves

From 1/2" to 8", with a PFA-lined body. The weir closes against a PTFE-faced diaphragm with no packing and no seat to score, which suits chlorine dioxide, bleach dosing and slurry.

Checks and sight glasses

Ball checks run 1/2" to 6" and swing checks 1-1/2" to 24", stopping backflow through a tripped pump. Sight glasses from 1/2" to 6" show the flow.

Sampling

Inline and ball sampling valves run 1/2" to 6", and reactor sampling systems serve vessels. Both take a closed sample of chlorine, HF or peroxide service without exposing the operator.

Automation

Tank farms and acid regeneration skids often run on actuated valves. We assemble those packages in house, fitting actuator, positioner, limit switches and solenoid to the lined valve on our own brackets and couplings. Every package is stroked on the bench and checked before shipment. Tell us the fail position, air or electric supply and control signal.

Fitting valves to the lined pipe around them

Our Fairhope shop fabricates the spools a valve bolts to, 1/2" through 12", in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless with PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene liners. PTFE lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel are stocked; PVDF and polypropylene lined to order. Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, and fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5, so valve and spool flanges meet.

The state's industries are surveyed on our Alabama lined pipe page, and our Mobile corridor page and Decatur and Huntsville page go plant by plant. Our technical details page gives bolt torques for lined flanges.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in Alabama

Which lined valve handles wet chlorine and hydrochloric acid from the McIntosh cell room?

We quote PFA-lined ball valves for isolation, and lined cylindrical plug valves where low torque matters. Chlorine and HCl permeate fluoropolymers, so the spools on either side get vented housings, and we check the lining against temperature.

What valve do you recommend for hydrogen peroxide at a Theodore plant?

A lined diaphragm valve, which has no cavity to trap peroxide, or a lined ball valve with a vented ball. The lining adds no iron or copper to speed decomposition, and the line should have no dead legs.

Can lined valves handle mixed nitric and hydrofluoric acid on a stainless pickling line at Calvert?

Yes. PFA and PTFE resist both acids, which together strip the passive film from stainless. HF permeates the lining, so we pair the valves with heavy-wall, vented lined spools and confirm materials for the acid temperature.

Do Alabama bleached board and pulp mills use lined valves on chlorine dioxide?

Lined diaphragm valves with PTFE-faced diaphragms are the usual choice for throttling chlorine dioxide solution, and lined butterfly valves suit large filtrate lines. Both resist the acidic, chloride-rich filtrate that pits stainless.
