Lined Pipe in Mississippi
Mississippi's chemistry is spread out. There are refineries at Pascagoula and Vicksburg, a shipyard at Pascagoula and a titanium dioxide plant at DeLisle that runs on chlorine. Columbus has steel and aluminum mills, and pulp mills at Columbus and New Augusta bleach cellulose. Marspec Technical Products fabricates plastic-lined spools for that service in Fairhope, Alabama, a short way east of the state line. Call (251) 625-4949.
PTFE, PVDF and polypropylene liners have been our work for more than fifty years. Send a line list or the tag of a failed spool, or contact us online.
Mississippi industries that run on lined pipe
The Gulf Coast
Jackson County's refinery, shipyards and former phosphate site are covered on our Pascagoula page. Farther west, in Harrison County, the DeLisle titanium dioxide plant chlorinates ore to make its pigment.
The pigment plant's hard services are wet chlorine, titanium tetrachloride and the hydrochloric acid it forms with moisture. PTFE carries all three, with vented housings on the chlorine and HCl lines. See our chlor-alkali page.
Columbus and the pine belt
At Columbus, an electric arc furnace sheet mill runs three galvanizing lines, one of them rated for 400,000 tons a year. Next door, the Aluminum Dynamics flat-rolled mill is built for 650,000 metric tons a year. Strip cleaning, pickling and pretreatment ahead of coating lines run on hydrochloric and sulfuric acid and caustic. Our steel pickling page covers that service.
Columbus also has a fluff pulp mill, and Georgia-Pacific runs the Leaf River cellulose mill at New Augusta. Their bleach plants put chlorine dioxide, acidic filtrate and extraction-stage caustic in PTFE-lined pipe. Polypropylene is never used on chlorine dioxide. More is on our pulp and paper page.
Water and poultry
Jackson's O.B. Curtis and J.H. Fewell plants serve the capital, and utilities statewide feed hypochlorite, coagulants, caustic and corrosion inhibitors. Poultry is Mississippi's first-ranked farm commodity, with about 700 million broilers a year, and the processing plants sanitize with peracetic acid and chlorine and clean in place with caustic and acid.
What we build and supply
Spools are fabricated in our Fairhope shop from 1/2" through 12", up to 20 ft long. We house them in carbon steel or 304/316 stainless, flanged to ANSI B16.5. PTFE-lined fittings in carbon and stainless steel are in stock; PVDF and polypropylene are lined to order. The full fitting range is on our lined pipe and fittings page, and our Mississippi fittings page covers replacements.
Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves, stocked in Stafford, Texas, ship from Fairhope, Alabama, in ball, plug, butterfly, diaphragm, check and sampling patterns. Automated valve packages are built in house. See our lined valves page and our Mississippi valve page.
We recommend PTFE for nearly everything above, from wet chlorine to pickle acid. PVDF is the toughest, most abrasion-resistant of the three liners, but amines and strong caustic attack it, and we prefer PTFE for ammonia. Polypropylene is available where a specification calls for it, but never for nitric acid, hypochlorite or other oxidizers.
Lined strainers, sight flow indicators, PTFE expansion joints and spacers and spectacle blinds round out the line. Caustic at 50 percent crystallizes as it cools. For caustic racks we supply clamp-on steam heaters, electric tracing and heat-transfer compound. Our Mississippi accessories page has more.
Standards and inspection
Our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, and lined fittings carry identifying markings on their flanges in accordance with ASTM F1545. Fittings conform dimensionally to ANSI B16.5. The lined fittings we supply are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX. We spark test every lined spool and fitting at a minimum of 10,000 volts. Liner temperature limits, liner thicknesses, flange dimensions and torque tables are on our Technical Details page.
Serving Mississippi from the coast to the Golden Triangle
Lined pipe, fittings and valves ship nationwide from Fairhope, Alabama, including to Pascagoula, Moss Point, Gulfport, DeLisle, Hattiesburg, New Augusta, Laurel and Jackson. We also ship to Canton, Vicksburg, Natchez, Columbus, Tupelo, Meridian and Southaven. We quote a fabrication time with every order; tell us your required date when you request a quote. FAQ: Lined Pipe in Mississippi
Which liner handles chlorine and titanium tetrachloride at a Gulf Coast pigment plant?
PTFE, with vented housings, for wet chlorine, liquid titanium tetrachloride and the hydrochloric acid it forms with moisture. The hot chlorinator and its gas train are beyond any liner's temperature limit, so lined pipe starts downstream of them.
Can you supply lined spools for pickling and cleaning lines at the Columbus mills?
Yes. PTFE suits hydrochloric acid pickle, with vented housings, and PVDF is an option within its 275 F limit. Polypropylene is available for HCl below about 150 F where a specification calls for it. Alkaline cleaning lines take PTFE, since PVDF stops near pH 12.
What should a Mississippi water system use for sodium hypochlorite feed?
PTFE-lined pipe with lined diaphragm valves. Commercial 12.5 percent bleach runs at about pH 12 to 13 with excess caustic. PVDF fits only dilute or lower-pH solution, and polypropylene is not used on hypochlorite at all.
