Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in New Jersey

New Jersey asks more of a valve than most states: an API synthesis train in Bridgewater that cannot tolerate a trace of iron, a sulfuric acid regeneration unit at Linden, fluorochemistry on 1,455 acres at Deepwater, hypochlorite feed at every water plant from Newark to Camden. The valve is where stem, seat and body all have to resist the fluid at once.

Marspec Technical Products supplies lined valves for those services along with the lined spools we fabricate in Fairhope, Alabama, with more than half a century of plastic lined piping behind each one. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. New Jersey services and the lined valves that fit them

API synthesis and biologics on the Route 1 and I-287 corridors

New Jersey leads the country in FDA-registered biopharmaceutical plants, and the API and biologics facilities from New Brunswick through Bridgewater, Rahway, Kenilworth and Summit move solvents, acids, clean-in-place caustic and deionized water. The valve requirements are purity, drainability and no dead legs, and PFA lined diaphragm valves answer all three: the diaphragm seals the stem out of the process, the lined weir drains, and the fluoropolymer adds nothing to the product. Lined sampling valves draw a batch sample without a dead leg; PFA lined ball valves isolate solvent recovery.

Alkylation acid and spent caustic on the Arthur Kill and the Delaware

The Linden refinery and its sulfuric acid regeneration plant handle fresh and spent alkylation acid, spent caustic and amine, and the Paulsboro refinery on the Delaware runs the caustic, acid and neutralization chemistry of an asphalt and base oil plant. PTFE lined ball valves give tight isolation on 98 percent acid and on spent acid loaded with hydrocarbon, lined plug valves serve unloading racks and tank manifolds, and lined checks protect acid and caustic pumps, all in carbon steel bodies with full flange ratings and no alloy upgrade.

Fluorochemistry at Deepwater

The fluoroproducts site at Deepwater on the Delaware runs hydrofluoric acid and fluorinated intermediates that attack glass, stainless and most alloys, plus its own wastewater plant. PFA lined ball and diaphragm valves are the usual answer on aqueous HF and the wastewater side, while anhydrous HF runs in carbon steel and Monel: PFA resists HF, permeates less than PTFE and seals smoother, and a fully lined body leaves no metal to pick up fluoride. Lined sampling valves keep operators clear of the stream.

Flavors, coatings, resins and hypochlorite

Northern New Jersey's flavor and fragrance plants run solvents, essential oils and acid catalysts; the Linden, Carteret, Sayreville and Parlin waterfronts host resin, catalyst and coatings units on monomers and chlorinated solvents; consumer product plants from Bergen County to Camden handle surfactants, caustic and bleach; and the wastewater plants at Newark and in Middlesex County, the water utilities and the nuclear station on Artificial Island dose hypochlorite, ferric chloride and demineralizer regenerants. Vented lined ball valves on hypochlorite, lined diaphragm valves for dosing and lined butterfly valves on big caustic and brine lines cover them.

Valve patterns and linings

Our plastic lined valves page carries sizes and ratings; all six run 1/2" through 12".

Diaphragm valves

Weir-type lined diaphragm valves with a PTFE faced diaphragm: no packing, full drainability, fine throttling, the pattern most API and biologics plants write into CIP specs.

Sampling valves

Lined sampling valves pull a representative sample from a pressurized line with no dead leg and no exposure, on alkylation acid or an API intermediate.

Ball valves

PFA lined body and ball for quarter-turn, bubble tight isolation of acid, caustic and solvents; vented balls for hypochlorite and peroxide.

Plug valves

Lined tapered plug valves with no cavity, low torque and in-line adjustability, for unloading racks, tank manifolds and anything that scales or crystallizes.

Butterfly valves

Lined wafer and lug butterfly valves with a PFA encapsulated disc, 2" through 12", for caustic, brine, filtrate and dilute acid in larger sizes.

Check valves

Lined ball and disc checks protect hypochlorite, acid and caustic pumps, every wetted part fluoropolymer, nothing to corrode open.

Automated valve assemblies

Where a valve answers to a control room we build the automation in-house: pneumatic and electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids mounted on the lined valve, stops set, the assembly cycled and tested before it ships, so commissioning gets one tagged unit instead of a box of parts. See our services page.

Valves, spools and fittings as one system

Because valve flange and spool flange seat liner on liner, we quote lined valves with the lined pipe spools we fabricate and the lined fittings that complete the run: spools and fittings 1/2" through 12", PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene lined, carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings, flanged to ANSI B16.5. The lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545, lined fittings are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, and every lined pipe spool and fitting is spark tested at a minimum of 10,000 volts. The spools are on our New Jersey lined pipe page, torques and liner ratings on our technical details page, and strainers, spacers and spectacle blinds on our piping accessories page.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in New Jersey

Which lined valve is right for clean-in-place and API service at a New Jersey pharmaceutical plant?

A PFA lined weir-type diaphragm valve. It drains completely, has no packing gland to shed particles or leak, keeps the stem out of the product, and adds no metal ions to deionized water, buffers or solvents. Pair it with a lined sampling valve where a batch sample is required.

Can lined valves handle fresh and spent alkylation acid at the Linden refinery complex?

Yes. PTFE and PFA are unaffected by 98 percent sulfuric acid and by spent acid carrying dissolved hydrocarbon at normal transfer temperatures, so lined ball valves for isolation, lined plug valves on unloading and lined checks at the pumps are standard choices, in carbon steel bodies with full flange ratings.

What lining do you recommend for hydrofluoric acid service at a Delaware River fluorochemical plant?

PFA. It resists aqueous HF and fluorinated intermediates that attack glass, stainless and most alloys, it permeates less than PTFE, and it seals on a smoother surface. We supply PFA lined ball and diaphragm valves for HF and size the lining thickness and venting to the concentration and temperature you give us, since HF does permeate PFA over time.

Why do New Jersey water plants specify vented ball valves on sodium hypochlorite?

Hypochlorite slowly releases gas as it decomposes, and a closed standard ball can trap liquid in its cavity and build pressure until something leaks. A vented ball relieves the cavity to the upstream side, and the fully lined body keeps out the iron and copper ions that speed the decomposition.
