Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in South Carolina

Hydrofluoric and nitric acid at a Columbia fuel plant, hydrochloric pickle liquor at Huger, chlorine dioxide at Catawba, sulfuric leach at Ridgeville: South Carolina's process streams differ in chemistry but agree that an unlined valve will not last. The right lined valve for each is a question of pattern as much as lining.

Marspec Technical Products of Fairhope, Alabama supplies plastic lined valves in PTFE and PFA and fabricates the lined spools and fittings they bolt to, backed by more than half a century of plastic-lined piping. We supply Swissfluid PFA- and PTFE-lined valves and build automated valve packages in house; Swissfluid USA supports its national distribution network from its facility in Stafford, Texas. Call (251) 625-4949 or contact us online with the media and conditions and we will specify the valve.

Where lined valves earn their keep in South Carolina

Nitric and hydrofluoric acid at the nuclear sites

The fuel fabrication plant in Columbia converts uranium hexafluoride to uranium dioxide, which generates hydrofluoric acid and uses nitric acid, and the Savannah River Site near Aiken runs nitric acid and caustic on a scale few plants match. At Bushy Park in Berkeley County, a nitroguanidine plant for the defense supply chain adds nitric and sulfuric acid and caustic neutralization. Hot nitric acid oxidizes elastomers and HF attacks glass and stainless alike; the standard pair is a PTFE-lined diaphragm valve, stem sealed off from the process, and a PFA-lined ball valve for isolation, and because HF permeates PTFE even at ambient temperature, the spools on those lines get heavy-wall liners and vented housings.

Pickle liquor and leach at Huger and Ridgeville

The steel mill at Huger pickles coil in hydrochloric acid and regenerates the spent liquor, and the battery-recycling plant at Ridgeville will leach black mass in sulfuric acid for lithium, nickel and cobalt. In the Upstate, the tire plants that make South Carolina the country's leading tire producer brass-plate and pickle cord in sulfuric acid and copper and zinc sulfate. Iron chloride, scale and sulfate solids in all of these pack a ball valve cavity, so acid circulation gets lined plug valves and fresh and regenerated acid gets lined ball valves.

Chlorine dioxide at the kraft mills

The kraft and containerboard mills at Catawba, Eastover, Hartsville and Bennettsville bleach with chlorine dioxide made on site from sodium chlorate and sulfuric acid, plus caustic, peroxide and hot filtrate. Chlorine dioxide and chloride-rich filtrate pit stainless steel in months, and a lined valve costs less than the alloy that resists them. PTFE-lined diaphragm valves throttle generator and tower lines, lined plug valves isolate chlorate and acid, and lined butterfly valves handle filtrate and extraction caustic.

Solvents, electrolytes and pine chemicals

The battery cell plant at Florence handles electrolyte solvents and recovers N-methylpyrrolidone, the specialty and pine-chemical producers around North Charleston run solvent, acid and resin streams, and Upstate tire compounding areas move solvents and process oils. Electrolyte salts release hydrofluoric acid at the first trace of moisture, and NMP swells most elastomers; PFA-lined ball valves hold both. The reactors at Seneca and York add boric acid, hydrazine and demineralized water, where a lined valve keeps iron out.

Valve types we supply

All six patterns are flanged to mate with ANSI B16.5 lined pipe, PTFE- or PFA-lined, 1/2" through 12"; our plastic lined valves page carries sizes and ratings.

Ball valves

Lined body, encapsulated ball, quarter-turn and bubble-tight. Isolation on HF, nitric acid, pickle liquor, caustic and solvents, with a bore that flushes clean.

Diaphragm valves

The diaphragm is the seal, so the stem never touches the process: no packing, no dead leg. For throttling chlorine dioxide, dosing hypochlorite and nitric acid service.

Plug valves

A lined tapered plug turning in a lined body, fluoropolymer on fluoropolymer: low torque, no cavity for pickle scale or sulfate solids, adjustable in service.

Butterfly valves

PFA-encapsulated disc in a wafer or lug body, 2" through 12", for filtrate, rinse water, brine and dilute acid where a compact valve is wanted.

Sampling valves

Lined sampling valves pull a clean, representative sample from acid, leach and electrolyte lines with no dead leg and no operator exposure.

Check valves

Lined ball and disc checks stop backflow at acid, hypochlorite and chemical feed pumps, with no wetted metal to corrode.

Automation

Marspec assembles automated valve packages in-house, mounting pneumatic and electric actuators, positioners, limit switches and solenoids on the lined valve and testing the finished assembly before it ships. Bleach plant sequences and pickle line interlocks run on that kind of package; we need only the control signal, fail position and air or power supply to size it.

Matching valves to the lined pipe system

We fabricate the lined spools and fittings our valves bolt to in 1/2" through 12" sizes, PTFE, PVDF or polypropylene liners, carbon steel or 304/316 stainless housings. Our fittings follow ANSI B16.5 dimensionally and are welded to ASME B31.3 by welders certified to ASME Section IX, each lined spool and fitting is spark tested at no less than 10,000 volts, and our lined pipe and fittings comply with ASTM F1545. Spectacle blinds from our piping accessories isolate a valve for service; certifications travel with the order for nuclear and defense work. Torque tables are on our technical details page; the industries are covered on our South Carolina lined pipe page.

FAQ: Plastic Lined Industrial Valves in South Carolina

What lined valve do you recommend for hydrofluoric and nitric acid at the Columbia fuel plant or the Savannah River Site?

A PTFE-lined diaphragm valve where the line is throttled or dosed and a PFA-lined ball valve for isolation, both with no wetted metal and both available in 304/316 stainless housings where the site standard requires. Material certifications are included with the shipment.

Can lined valves handle hot hydrochloric pickle liquor at the Huger steel mill or sulfuric leach at a Ridgeville battery recycler?

Yes. PTFE and PFA resist hydrochloric and sulfuric acid at any concentration within their temperature range, though HCl permeates them as temperature rises, and lined plug valves tolerate the iron chloride, scale and sulfate solids those circuits carry without packing or seizing.

Which lined valves go into a chlorine dioxide bleach plant at Catawba, Eastover or Hartsville?

PTFE-lined diaphragm valves on generator and tower lines, lined plug valves on chlorate and sulfuric acid feed, and lined butterfly valves on filtrate and extraction caustic. Chlorine dioxide pits stainless steel; fluoropolymer linings resist it.

Do you automate lined valves for South Carolina plants, and who mounts the actuator?

We do, in our own shop. Actuator, positioner, limit switches and solenoid are mounted on the lined valve, stroked and tested before shipment, so the package arrives ready for air and wiring rather than as parts to assemble on site.
